It's a common misconception that metalheads are illiterate. Now we all know that this couldn't be further from the truth. But it is true that leading this rockstar lifestyle often does not leave enough time to for our literary pursuits. This is where graphic novels come in. It's nice to be able to pick up a book that you can sit down and read in a couple of hours on a lazy Sunday afternoon and not have to concern yourself with 999 pages of an author's thought process. Which isn't a bad thing either, but refer back to the statement about not having enough time in the day. Plus as an added bonus with graphic novels, you get lots of pretty pictures to look at! So now I'd like to take this moment to introduce y'all to one of my favorite artists, deviant film producer, and huge inspiration in my life, Hideshi Hino, master of the macabre. Hideshi is probably most infamously known for his pseudo snuff film, "The Flower Of Flesh And Blood", which fell into the hands of Mr. Charlie Sheen and was subsequently banned from most of the civilized countries in the world as being a real snuff film. But that's a story for another time. Mr. Hino spends most of his time writing and creating the artwork for his line of graphic novels called "Hino Horror", the most popular being his semi-autobiographical "The Panorama Of Hell". The fifth book in the "Hino Horror" line is "Living Corpse", a story of Shinkai Yosuke, an explorer whose yacht is wrecked out at sea. He loves his family so much that instead of drowning at sea and never being heard from again, he rises from the water's edge in an unknown town with no knowledge of his former life and goes forth in search of himself. Oh yeah, did I mention that he is a corpse who is rotting rapidly? Along the way he leaves a trail of squirming maggots and frightened witnesses until a group of scientific doctors get word of him and decide they need to study him and the phenomenon of his reanimated dead cells. These scientists subject him to a battery of grueling, painful tests such as injecting him with perserving fluids and giga-watts of electricity in an attempt to revive his dead cells. Finally Yosuke can't take it any longer and kills one of them during his escape. He flees into the city and is hunted by the police while he searches to see his family one last time. This story is filled with life, love, longing, despair, hopelessness and lots of maggots! If you are looking for a light read that will horrify and make you feel sentimental at the same time, then click the link and add "Living Corpse" to your library! Three severed thumbs up! ![]()
