![]() Author:Jay Faerber & James Francis Book:Dodges Bullets Record Company:Image Comics Writer: Mark Carras I'm not a big comic book fan to be honest. As far as I'm concerned, if it ain't The TICK I just don't give a shit. When Abrasive Rock friend James Francis told us that he was jumping back into the comic book gig, I honestly was only interested in it because a friend was involved. Well, the day came that it was released and I immediately walked on over to the comic book shop down the street (five minute walk away). Of course, since I am not a comic book fan and had other things to do it stayed on my dining room table for about two week before I even picked it up. One day I had to bus it to work though, and I needed something to read for the trip. The comic book was just perfect. So off I went to my shitty lame paying gig with my still new comic book. Well, it was a good thing it was only about 30 minutes of reading or I would have missed my stop. Yeah, we have all seen the loser gone detective type story before, but something about this one made it better. I'm not sure if it was all the references to bands I like, the local scenery (it's based in Seattle which is about an hours' drive from where I live), the storyline, the way it was drawn, or the fact that I knew one of the two main people involved. Whatever the reasons, this thing was the first non-The TICK comic that has ever swallowed me up like that. Now the one thing I did notice was that this thing did come off more like a really good storyboard for a movie. I would love to see this on DVD, but as I said before I am not a big comic book fan. So of course the much more lazy way of just putting in a DVD would be what crosses my mind. Maybe it was the whole black and white thing...nah, it was me being a lazy ass. This is not to say that the black and white job looks 'sketched' or anything. In fact the artwork is the best work I have ever seen James do. If this was what kept him so damn busy the last year it was time well spent. Now I don't know what the hardcore comic book fans are going to think of this one, but I think you people that haven't bought a comic book since Spawn was the hot new thing should check this thing out. In fact it is put out by the same company as Spawn (Image Comics). I know that Movie Poop Shoot gave it a good review, so who knows what could happen. I can't put my finger on what makes this so damn good, but now I am left wanting to check out other work by this Jay Faerber guy. Even if it's just to see if it's his way of telling the story that grabbed me so much or something else. I can't speak for you hardcore comic book fans, but you people like me that read one comic book every few years should make this your semi-Annual purchase. It's short and it's cheap, so you can't use lack of funds or time as an excuse. Go by this damn thing now! Oh, and if you wonder why Abrasive Rock is pushing a comic book, the leader of one of the bands we cover did the art. We would cover software design if Kerry King wrote code in his spare time. We are whores, so deal with it.
