Well, I’ll just start off by saying I like this album. The music rocks. The vocals, guitar, bass and drums are all really good together. Everybody sounds really tight. I just like the overall feel of this disc.
I wasn’t so sure when I heard track 1 “Feeling Good is Good Enough” because the singer does this funny thing where he sings the exact same notes the guitar plays, and it sounds like it goes a little low for his range. But he redeems himself quickly. He does some screaming, but mostly he just sings. His voice sounds really good on track 5 “Killers for Hire.” The guitar does great classic sounding solos and solid rock riffs. Track 6, “Horsewhipper” has a really good chunky sounding verse. The little half-solo things after the choruses are cool. However, most of the rest of the tracks just sound like good straight up rock music. There isn’t too much showing off on the guitarist’s part, and it’s nice to just hear some good rock music. The vocalist also plays guitar but it’s not clear if he plays the lead or the rythym. The bass player is good. Especially on Track 6, mentioned above. Maybe I really just like this song. The bass is just so chunky in this one. That’s probably what gives the song it’s darker feel. It’s just very low. The drummer is perfect for this disc. He works well with the bass player. He uses my favorite of all the cymbals, the ride, a lot. He just keeps the songs steady and flowing really well. This band is lucky to have this guy. He’s spot on. The liner includes lyrics and trippy red white and black photos. The cover has knives and flowers. A nice contrast I suppose. One thing that was weird about the liner notes is that they mention Jonah Citty on the guitar joined in July of 2005. OK. So what’s that supposed to mean? I don’t like when new members are put through the ringer with that “he’s the new guy” crap. He’s either in the band or he’s not. Other than that little rant, I really do like this disc. There are some vocal harmonies reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age, but the music is much darker than that. The disc at times reminds me also of punk, and also of grunge. It has all of those elements. For the most part, I’d say it’s just really good rock. If you like maybe 90’s (?) rock, you’d probably like this, because it’s that, but also so much more.
