I haven’t even put this CD in yet, and I already like it. I hope the music kicks ass. The CD cover has the tough woman with the bandana thing, but the insert, oh the insert is freakin’ awesome. It has Bush, Cheney, Condi and more as flies. The songs have names like “Open Your Eyes”, “Not My Leader” and “War Mongers.” I can’t wait to pop this one in…
Yep, just what I expected. Chunky grindy rock, with some industrial background elements and some punk solos. First I want to say that everyone who tries to pigeonhole System of a Down as a “political” band should give this a listen. THIS is political music. There are a bunch of phrases basically calling out the government, and also calling out the rest of us to rise up and fight for what we believe in and not get dragged down by the state of the system. There are even some samples of President Bush talking, using fear terms. It’s pretty sweet, if you like that sort of thing.
The vocals are super growly. You know those bands where the vocalist growls and you can’t even tell what he’s saying because it’s so low and dark? Well this is kind of like that except that you CAN hear this guy. He sounds like Satan or something. It’s pretty cool. There are a couple songs where they use some ambient backing vocals, but it’s mostly just the one guy.
The guitars do some cool solo things from time to time, but it’s mostly just dropped tuning riffage. I really like how low everything sounds. The vocals are low, the guitar riffs are low, and the bass is low. The bass player and the drummer are both pretty much keeping up the rhythm, but there are a few moments where the drummer just totally goes off. He’s really pretty good.
Normally I might blow something like this off as cheesy, but the music kicks so much ass, and the premise really is something I agree with. So I will be listening to this album a lot in the near future. I recommend this to anybody who hates the state of our government, likes metal, and doesn’t want to have to listen to reggae to get that anti authority feel. Good stuff, man!
