ANTHROPIA hails from France, an area where one doesn’t see a lot of progressive metal bands venturing into the prog community. Perhaps even more unique, ANTHROPIA is primarily composed of Hugo Lefebvre (ex –Hamka, performs guitar, bass, keyboards and lead vocals) and drummer Damian Rainaud. The female vocals are rendered by Marie Eve-Orengo and a few bass lines by Thomas Letscher, but the rest is performed by Hugo himself, who began studying classical guitar at the age of six. The influence is evident as Hugo manages to incorporate classic thrash, speed metal, and power metal in the more complex and intricate arrangements.

“The Ereyn Chronicles: Part 1 – The Journey Begins” is footed in the writings of Quentin Borderie. Interestingly enough, in the video provided with the album, Hugo states that, “I was not a huge fan of fantasy, but I was so truly captivated by Quentin’s story that I wrote music around it.” Lyrically, it’s a feast for all the fantasy metal freaks out there. The universe of Ereyn has sunk into chaos and the main character, Amryl, attempts to track down the all knowing oracle and save his world. Even if you’re turned off by the notion of fantasy, there are plenty of impressive arrangements, predominantly led by commanding guitar and keyboard work, to keep any progressive metal fan’s ear to the speaker.

Overall the ten parts (songs) tend to play out like one long song, making it personally difficult describe each individual section. The heavily layered music incorporates classical, symphonic, bombastic, even melodic elements, integrating some serious guitar chops and solos. Besides the somewhat heavier driven music, many will note Hugo’s vocals as unique. While powerful, they’re not quite the same as defined by many progressive vocalists. Nevertheless, Hugo manages in intertwine some impressive ranges and textures into the songs.

Hugo has stated he plans to release two more parts to the Ereyn Chronicles. Likely, it will be interesting to see how his writing evolves with each album. If this is any indication for future releases, good things are to come as most progressive metal fans would likely agree.
