So let's start this review by saying this does not fit the format of Rock My Monkey in any way shape or form. This is about as far from our format as I think it can get. So why am I posting a review? Several reasons. First off I'm a fan of Gina Gershon. Second, I spent time listening to it and I don't have any time to waste. I made a goal to post 50 reviews before the new year strikes. So to take time to listen to a cd and not post a review is something I just do not have time to do. I also have to admit that part of the reason I even thought of giving this coverage is that I hoped to get an interview with Gina. It is looking less and less like I am going to get that opportunity, so now I can give my honest opinion with no fear of it closing any doors. So what does this thing sound like? Well, being that part of her career is that of a comedian I expected this to be either a comedy cd or a straight up rock release (that would have fit our format). What I got instead is a cd that sounds more like the soundtrack to a "chick flick" version of something like Deadwood. Like Gina secretly wishes to go back in time and be a dancing girl at a western saloon. It's not all like that, but that is the vision I end up with in my mind as I listen to this cd. Overall it is a mix of jazzy bar tunes, alternative pop, and the softer side of traditional country. The good news is that Gina can sing more than most would expect. Her Broadway experience serves her well and I am sure that is where she got her chops. Did this Rock My Monkey? No. When you expect apple pie, a piece of cake just doesn't taste as good. It's not that the cake is bad. It's just not what you expected. For whatever reason, I expected this thing to rock more. This is about as far from rock as it gets. This thing made me "Prey for Rock & Roll". Is it bad? No. It is actually better than I thought it would be as far as quality song writing and talented singing. It just isn't anything like I expected and is not even close to the kind of stuff I like. I doubt seriously if anyone who reads this site on a regular basis would find anything about this cd they like. Will this review kill any chance I have for getting an interview? Probably, but this is the truth. Check out her MySpace page to preview some songs. If you like it, try her website to get the cd. At the time of me putting this review together it seems it doesn't even have enough distribution to be available on Amazon. ![]()
