So you all know that I am one of, if not the, biggest Overkill fanboy on the planet, right? Well even I have to admit that the band was playing by numbers the past two releases. There were a few songs that stuck out like "old school", but for the most part they were on automatic. Then something happened. They got on a tour called Gigantour. Dave Mustaine saw that the band needed to be saved from their own banality, so he gave them that jolt they needed. Then another couple old friends came and gave them another life up on the moral. With Bodog Music, the band rejoined forces with Jonny and Marsha Zazula whom they knew from the band's Megaforce Records beginning. This left the band more excited about Overkill then they had been in a very long time and it shows in the music on this disc. Like many of the classic Overkill releases, this is full of songs that you find yourself singing along to sometimes on even the first time through. This is what Overkill has always been good at. They make some of the most brutal pop tunes in metal. The songs are catchy as hell, but still hit like a sledgehammer. Those legendary hooks are all over this thing. Now I have always said that Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God has a nice tone, but on the L.O.G. material things start to drag due to his lack of range. Well, put him with Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and it is a whole 'nother story. The two vocalists seem to bring out the best in each other as well as compliment each others sound more than you would expect. It also helps to break things up for the cd overall and keep the listener paying attention. Another song that helps this cd flow so well is "Head On". The intro is an acoustic intro that keeps the listener from getting the listeners fatigue that so much modern metal creates. Even the production on here is better than we have heard on the past several Overkill releases. So the band is getting very good at self producing their own music. Something very few bands can say. In more ways than I care to count, this is the best Overkill cd in more than half a decade. The only Overkill cd from this century that even comes close to being as good as this one is Bloodletting. I think this one might even be a touch better (post your hate mail on the forums). After just a few listens I caught myself being shocked that a song wasn't from a much older classic Overkill release. It is just that damn good! So did this thing Rock My Monkey? Hell yeah! Overkill is back, better than ever. My gods didn't fail me this time. Favorite song? I have thought long about this and I just can't pick. There is something about each and every song that I love. If you took any of these songs out the cd would suffer from it. I hope you all are not too shocked when this tops my list for best releases for this year. ![]()
