So I am trying to finish the year out by getting through as much of the three stacks of promos that have been haunting my desk as I can. The goal is to post 50 reviews between Christmas and New Years. The sad thing is that they stay in my stack because I am really interested in them. They just come at me quicker than I can review them and do the behind the scenes work this website takes. Being the boss sucks sometimes. So I get to this gem buried in the first stack and I start reading up on it. I see that it was released in May. Am I really THAT far behind? Yikes! I do indeed suck. I mention all of this to point out that this was not buried because of a lack of interest. Just too much to do to cover even my favorite band in the world (Overkill's new one is 3 more promos down).

I should also point out that this is not nearly as heavy as the stuff this website normally covers. It is however a great rock cd. Thrash may be my favorite style of music, but I listen to way more than that. If you can't deal with that, then too bad. Now many may have stayed away from this because that brainless twat Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas is one of the musicians involved. Well, this is not anything like the tripe that her shitty solo cd was or that annoying crap that Black Eyed Peas has always been. I would never have anything to do with it if it was. She only does background vocals, so she was not able to ruin it in any way.

I am shocked that the dance elements here do not drive me nuts or piss me off like I would expect. I despise that style, but the guitar work seems to make it cool somehow. Perry may be a wack job when he talks in interviews, but when it comes to creating great music the man is a genius. These may be more pop than rock, but they are extremely well done pop. Unlike most modern artists that try to inject funk into the mix, here it comes across as natural and honest. The song "Awesome" is annoyingly repetitive and the first stinker of the cd. "Insanity Rains" is my favorite song on the cd, but it is followed closely by the title track "Ultra Payloaded". Almost every song on this cd has this narcotic like quality that draws you in and won't let go. Never too serious and always fun. What I like though is that it reminds us all that a song doesn't have to be some vapid mindless garbage to be fun. It is rare that a cd comes out that can be fun while still being amazingly well written songs that respect the craft of song writing. This is one of those times.

Now much has been made of the song "Woman In The Window" because it has some lost vocal track of The Doors Jim Morrison on vocals. I have to say that it is a pretty large disappointment. It's not the worst song on the cd, but it is one of the weakest.

So did this thing Rock My Monkey? Yes! I was amazed at how much I did enjoy this one. I never liked Porno For Pyros at all. I have grown to hate Jane's Addiction because every one of their singles have been played to death so much. So this is currently my favorite project Perry Ferrell has ever done. Jane's Addiction may be closer to what I listen to, but this is new and fresh to my ears. Glad to hear Perry still has more great music in him. Now can they do it again without Nuno Bettencourt on guitar? Time will tell.
