So my favorite era of Testament has always been the Megaforce/Atlantic era, so this Spitfire collection was not something I was too excited about to be honest. In fact this promo has sat on my desk longer then I think any cd ever has. It was released at the end of February! Yes, that would be 2007, so it is almost too late to even get reviewed at all. Lucky for me this thing starts off with two Atlantic era songs. By doing live versions of "The New Order" and "Souls Of Black" Spitfire is able to keep from getting sued by Atlantic but still include music released from that era of the band. Since "Hatreds Rise" is from my all time least favorite Testament cd, I am shocked I like it at all, but he uses his classic thrash style vocal I like instead of the cookie monster vocal. "The Burning Times" does use the vocal style where Chuck started following trends instead of starting them, so you death metal fans might like it more then I do. Now with "Jon Doe" this cd starts to really be worth my time as I am starting to think I misjudged the cd Demonic. That is two out of three songs I like from a cd I thought I hated. This is the reason compilations like this are still very important. They can sometimes open a very closed mind. "Careful What You Wish For" is everything I expect a song from The Gathering to be however. Decent music, but one of the weaker performances from Chuck and the reason I still count this as one of the worst Testament releases. "Down for Life" however pulls another trick on my ears and leaves me confused. Chuck is back to giving a great performance. Did I misjudge this cd as well? Maybe this is why I let this promo sit on my desk for so long. Somehow I knew I should fear it. For the rest of the cd they stick with material from the Megaforce/Atlantic era done live, so now surprises there. Did this Rock My Monkey? Yes, but it left me more curious then anything. Now I want to go to my local independent used cd shop and give those two Spitfire studio releases another try. Have my tastes changed? Did I judge them unfairly? Are you there God It's me Margret? Oh wait, ignore that last one and just pick this cd up by clicking on the cd cover above and below. ![]()
