Yes is one of those bands that I have always wanted to like, but I just couldn't get into them. Talented? Yes! Everything about the band is great except one thing. They are boring as hell! One thing they could do to make things more interesting is add some diversity to the mix. The vocals are always high enough to make dogs bark. If they added some mid-range vocals in there it would really help things. Now the vocals would help more than anything, but it would also be nice if they picked up the pace in a few strategic places. Just a few tempo changes here and there is all I am asking. I'm not asking that they make this some speed metal band or anything. Keep things exactly the same as they are 90% of the time. Just toss in a tempo change in a few places to give the song a climax.

Now this two disc set is recorded in high enough quality that you can hear everything, but not so clear that you question how live the cd truly is. I like the fact that it isn't so full of solos that it gets in the way of the songs. Only one track on the cd is a solo and that is the keyboards of Rick Wakeman. At a little under 5 minutes it does start to drag, but at least it is the only solo on the two discs. I have to say that not a single song on the cd stands out for me. I'm not enough of a fan to know if this is older or newer material either. I'm not even going to try to pretend that I know more about this band than I do. So consider this the opinion of someone who respects the musicianship and talent of these performers, but just isn't a major fan.

So did this Rock My Monkey? No. I really wanted to get into this, too. I hear members of this band on a podcast show I listen to all the time at www.BobRivers.com and the way they talk about the band makes me keep giving their cds another spin. I really give a major effort to "getting it", but I just can't. However, if you don't mind constantly high singing (not operatic though) over extremely mellow prog rock sounds good to you then get this cd! It is all very well written, arranged, performed, produced, and mixed. I can say more good things about this band then the two complaints mentioned above. It's just not enough diversity for me.
