God, I tried to enjoy this cd all the way through. It was so close, it was frustrating. The first song, Anger Cage, started out and was pretty darn good. Okay, not as aggressive as it could be, especially with a title like Anger Cage, but it’s still catchy. I’m starting to get into it. Then the second song comes in, Right Before My Eyes. It’s whiney and emotional, and trite, and makes my eyes cross in aggravation. My excitement is gone, and I’m instantly deflated. Is this what it’s like for a guy to be blue-balled? The rest of the cd is just like that. A good song, followed by a song that I can really only call ‘emo’. That’s probably not entirely accurate, but what else am I supposed to call a song that has the singer lamenting about how alone he feels now that someone has left him, and oh, how can he let go? I would be tempted to check my blood sugar after one of those songs, because I’m pretty sure it would be dangerously high. So here are the good songs (the ones that have a hint of backbone and beat to them): Anger Cage, Time Is Slipping Away, Live Again, How Great You Are, World At War, and Forget Her. The pattern isn’t quite good, bad, good, bad, but it’s close. More than half the ten songs on here are catchy. But the other four songs drag the cd’s pace down so far you just can’t get into the whole thing. Personally I think I would move all the catchy songs I mentioned to the beginning of the cd, and end it with those oh-so-emotional songs. That might be enough to save it, since you wouldn’t get the up, down, up, up, down that made me crazy. Those ‘lesser’ songs might even sound better all grouped together. I just know that while I listened to this in my car any pedestrians crossing my path were in great danger, because I was too busy scrambling for the fast forward button to pay attention to the road. I don’t want to make it sound like I hated this cd. That’s the problem. I liked so many songs on here that I know I’ll listen to it again. The production is surprisingly good. The band plays together well, and you don’t hear anyone missing a beat. The singer’s voice is perfect for this style, including those emotional songs that I didn’t get into. I think with a little bit of rearranging of the songs on the cd, it would go over better. I really hope the band keeps trying. I think they have a lot of potential. Once they decide which direction they want to focus their sound, I think they’ll take off. I personally hope they go less for the emotional sound, and work at the catchier, heavier songs. They did those very, very well. Best of luck in the future to this band. They’re soooo close! ![]()
