Sometimes I notice that things that aren't my style are TOTALLY my style. I've always had an eclectic taste in music, but I always boast extreme metal as my favorite, which it is, but in my top ten most favorite bands, The Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones and NOFX are right up there with Pantera, Amon Amarth and Meshuggah. Go figure. Hollywood's alternative/art rock band, Everything Is Energy, are one of those bands that are so far out there on my eclectic side, that it took me a while before I realized that I absolutely LOVE their first album, “A Band By Chris Shinn.” Everything about this album emanates what I usually try to avoid in listening to bands: tenderness, no distortion, no anger and pure beauty. I gave this two spins and tried as hard as I could to not like it, just because it is so unlike what I usually listen to, but little by little, I started hearing Billy Corgan and Deftones influences and I just couldn't turn away after that.

Chris Shinn, the mastermind behind EIE, is wonderfully brilliant. His voice is like fine wine, where you identify all of the different flavors swirling around in a mix of magnificence by channelling the likes of Robert Plant, Billy Corgan, Chino Moreno and a splash of Josh Todd in such a way that is hard to fathom. He's at his best when he has a bit of grit in his voice because his soul really comes out in it, like the opening to the song “Someday I...”, which, in spite of it's TOOL influence here and there, I still find enjoyable. He sounds EXACTLY like Robert Plant sometimes, like on the song”Want And Need”, and when you think that Plant is considered to have one of the greatest rock n roll voices of all time, it just shows how talented Chris Shinn truly is.

EIE is most certainly Shinn's baby, though there are others in the band as well. A guitarist/bassist named Noah Lebenzon and drummer David Brotherton. Shinn plays both bass and guitar while handling vocal duties. All instruments are adequately played and the production is sublime. For a trio, this band really packs a punch as far as sounding full and powerful. The style of music makes me think of flying through big, billowy clouds made of cotton candy. It's a very floaty sound. I cant truly put my finger on what I would define the sound as, which is just fine with me. I'll suffice to say that it is just brilliance to the likes that I haven't been able to fully grasp yet.

The best part about this album is that there is a PERFECT song. Perfect songs are few and far between and the vast majority of bands never can write one. A few songs that I think are perfect are The Smashing Pumpkins' “Mayonaise”, Down's “Bury Me In Smoke”, Pantera's “Strength Beyond Strength” and Morbid Angel's “God Of Emptiness”. EIE's song, “Real Ea$y”, is one of those perfect songs, to me. Everything seems to just fall into place, the music, the vocals, the order of things. It is 100% perfect. I've listened to this song about 20 times in a row and every time it gives me chills.

I don't know who I would recommend this to. Anyone and everyone with an open mind. I think that metal heads would even like it if they gave it a few spins. Especially if they listen to “Real Ea$y”, I just can't get enough of this song. Sadly, EIE's myspace page doesn't have that particular song streamed, but it is streamed on their official website, though you'll have to refresh the front page until that song pops up. If you are metalhead, you might want to steer clear of the song “Hut”, because of the chorus of “Come kiss me now, come hold me now”... just because it might rub you the wrong way like it did me at first. I think this is a fantastic album, though, I'd really like to see what EIE does in the future.
