When I first listened to this release, I have to say I kind of liked it. After only the second listen it started to get boring. Now I have to say I will probably never listen to it again. Not sure why, but Rob Rock's material has never really done much for me. I always end up passing it off to another writer to see if they like it more. There is never anything that sticks out as the reason I don't get excited, but try as I might I just can't get into his stuff. I would have passed this onto another writer too, but we currently do not have any writers that cover the standard power metal releases. So I will do my best to cover it instead. With a guest line up of Roy Z, Gus G., Bobby Jarzombek, and a few others I am not shocked that this is getting mostly rave reviews from other writers. So I have given this thing an insane amount of listens trying to get into it. It just doesn't Rock My Monkey. I can tell you that the production is great, so that is not at all the reason. The song writing is decent, but maybe it could have had more hooks? I know that might have made it get a better review from me, but the Power Metal purists would have slammed it for that. The performances here are top notch as well. You get talented musicians and the parts are going to be played with precision. Everything about this cd is done very well except one thing. The lyrics. They just bug me. Now I have to admit that many others may not be as bothered by them as I am. They just came off preachy and reminded me of the Christian Metal band's of the early 80's. I felt like they were trying to save my soul or something. This has some very strong religious themes in it and being a very bitter ex-Christian that bothered me. I say this in full disclosure so you the reader know that this review may be a bit tainted by my own personal prejudice. So although the cd could have used a more dynamic writing approach, more catchy riffs, and a few lyrical hooks, what ruined the cd for me was the religiously preachy lyrics. So what does this mean to you the reader? If you want a Power-Metal cd without dynamic song writing, without catchy guitar riffs, and with very few lyrical hooks, and religious lyrical themes do not bother you, then this is the next cd you should buy! I don't mean that facetiously or sarcastically in any way. This is a good cd for what it is. Just because I couldn't get into it, doesn't mean you won't love it.
