Silent Fate put a lot of things into their music, and I should give credit where credit is due: no two songs on their most recent effort, "The Autumn Machine", sound alike. This band literally jumps from an all-acoustic track to a Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver style rock song to black metal and death metal sounding tunes. There's even a Duran Duran cover (Come Undone) on here!!!! It's a seriously schizophronic effect to listen to the album from beginning to end, but all in all it does tend to keep you listening. These New Yorkers, while not sounding exactly original in their melodies and in their harder moments (come on...who DOES sound original anymore?), definitely get a huge A for effort.

Musically the band are competent enough, and with all the tossing around of styles on this record, they need to be. Vocalist Alessio kind of borders on annyingly popish half the time to my ears, and throws out a ton of that clean, sweet, singin' for the radio sound. But just when I've barfed a couple of times, some actual METAL vocals kick in, especially in the earlier tunes on the disc. Bassist/Keyboardist Anthony also provides some vocals, and I have a feeling he's the one handling the more black and death metal (all 6 or 7 times they occur on here) style vocals. Guitarist Steve (if anyone's wondering, I couldn't find last names on these guys) walks the line between playing painfully simple to playing decently technical. Drumming (provided by Danny) on here is cool and has a decent flow with the faster tunes. Production on "The Autumn Machine" is decent, though there are a couple parts on the album that could have been recorded better.

Songwise, I like "Permicide", and the title track that most, they're definitely the heavier songs here. "The Autumn Machine" does change tempo a bit in the song, vascillating from a black metal sounding intro to a slower "rock" tempo to a small keyboard break. The Duran Duran cover for "Come Undone" is interesting in that it just happens to be the only DD song that I actually like. "Whisper My Sweet Dear" kinda sounds like it was MADE for the radio, which is a bit of a turn off to yours truly. "Skin" sounds a lot like the Deftones, from the White Pony era. "Create" is a catchy, cool tune that you can't help but bang your head to, although this song could do without the keyboards they put in. "Whole" is the aforementioned STP-sounding tune, and it really doesn't do much for me, as it sounds way too contrived.

To be honest, the entire album is wierd, and if you don't like your styles being meshed together too much, avoid it. However, if you find too much "extreme" elements in your music to be boring after 38 seconds or so, check this thing out. I'll probably keep this cd around as it is an interesting break from what I normally listen to, but I'll most likely be hitting fast forward a bit before throwing in some Braindrill.
