Bushwhack labels itself as an experimental progressive rock band. It was formed by guitarist Jamie van Dyck, bassist Brandon Green, keyboardist Frank Sacramone and drummer Ben Shanbrom. Bushwhack serves as the band's debut album.

As I stated in my recent review of Machinations of Dementia by Blotted Science, so many progressive metal/rock bands sound extremely boring because their "songs" are nothing more than self-indulgent wankfests that never fail to enter "auto-pilot prog mode." However, Bushwhack's problem is the complete opposite since their songs are too damn simple, and not just by prog rock standards. For instance, only keyboardist Frank Sacramone reminds listeners from time to time that Bushwhack claims to be influenced by Dream Theater, Symphony X and Tool. Now I understand that Bushwhack doesn't necessarily consider itself to be a metal band, but it sure seems as if it's trying to be one for the majority of its debuts duration. This is especially true in the case of guitarist Jamie van Dyck, who sounds as if he's trying to play super heavy riffs, but is held back from doing so thanks to the dreaded production sound known as somewhat intense, but not nearly intense enough. Back to the riffs, van Dyck unfortunately plays nothing but simple power chord and chug-based riffs that would probably sound killer if they were offset by more complex/crazier ones at least every once in awhile, but end up sounding stale instead because they're not. Great examples of songs that contain simple riffs that sound badass, brutal and even refreshing because they're offset by more complex/crazier ones are "Wake Up Dead" by Megadeth, "Clenching the Fists of Dissent" by Machine Head and "Enemy Within" by Arch Enemy. Perhaps van Dyck would have benefitted from listening to those songs before Bushwhack recorded this album? All things considered, there's almost nothing that can be considered progressive, or metal, about Bushwhack, and the members will probably be better off referring to the band's style as experimental rock instead.

So, who will like the band and album? Fans of experimental and/or alternative rock that contains a small dose of heaviness. For a good practical joke, tell a progressive metal fan that this a progressive metal album, and RUN!!!!!!!!
