United Kingdom based duo Eternal Descent recently released their debut album, Losing Faith, which consists of “elements of heavy rock, industrial, ambient, and experimental, fused with romantic film score arrangements,” according to members Llexi Leon (everything but vocals) and Elysha West (vocals).

How accurate is the claim above? Let’s see, since the majority of the songs sound like a hybrid of music by Garbage and Steve Vai accompanied by the vocal stylings of Anette Olzon (Nightwish since 2007) and Christina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), I would say it’s pretty damn accurate. For instance, a good way to imagine Eternal Descent’s sound is to simultaneously picture Garbage’s “Stupid Girl,” just about any song from Steve Vai’s Passion & Warfare and vocals by any of the best female vocalists in the symphonic/gothic metal genres. With all of the comparisons to Steve Vai, I’m sure the question “can Llexi Leon really touch his ability as a guitarist?” has popped up. What’s the answer? Well, it remains to be seen if Leon will ever reach Vai’s level, but he does have virtuoso caliber chops on the guitar, and many of his melodic and ultra fast solos on Losing Faith are quite reminiscent of Vai’s playing. From there, Leon is also noted for doing everything but vocals for the album, which means that he handled production duties. When it comes to his production work, it certainly could have been better, but oddly enough it actually suits the album, and it just may be better this way than it would have been with a “great” production job. As for the highlights, metal fans who give this disc a shot will probably prefer “Angels in the Architecture” and “Black Blood” while industrial and experimental rock fans will like “Whispers” and “Our Own Devils” the most.

Since Eternal Descent is a group that mixes many contrasting styles together, a lot of people may decide that they’re not for them. However, those who like contrasting styles or are looking for something different may enjoy Eternal Descent very much.
