This is a very strange cd or me. The first several times I tried to listen to it it bored me to no end. Then one day I was in the mood for something very heavy and I pulled this one up on my cell phone and blasted away while at work. It did the trick and I was able to get done with everything on time and get off work on time. Now I have listened to it over and over again and I just can't think of why I didn't get into it sooner. I think the reason is simply that I wasn't in the right mood. You see this is the problem with doing these reviews. We get sent the cd and we have a press agent that doesn't get credit (payment) unless we get the review done before their deadline. Well, if I would have rushed this review I would have just slammed it as boring. Then I would have regretted the review and would have looked like a douche. There are so many releases coming out that when a publicist asks me if I am interested in it and if they can count on coverage I always say yes. Sure we will cover it! However, it may take 6 months to get the damn thing an honest review. My most humble apologies to my contacts for that. I try my best, but with this online journalism not making anyone any real profits this problem will not go away. So as you could figure out from what I said above, ths cd is pretty damn heavy. This is what I consider heavy. No, there are no blast beats, cookie monster death vocals, flat monotone 'bear on the mic' metalcore vocals, or any of that crap though. This is not about some false sense of brutality or some endurance test to show how brutal you are. This is about pushing the boundaries of being heavy without sacrificing the integrity of the song writing. These songs are brutal by using a perfect balance of speed, dynamics, and a harsh vocal that shows a brutal range. No, they don't do that tired cliche where they go from cookie monster vocals to super clean emo vocals either. Instead it is something in between the two. Like the pissed off brother of pre-Black Album Metallica. Maybe that's because this band was created at the same time as Metallica released their first demo? Ya think?
Now the band have an image that would make one think it is all about getting drunk. Sure "Die with a Beer in Your Hand", and "Dead Men Drinking" are great songs, the band has way more to offer. Want to hear how to make a awesome thrash song without going a million miles a minute? Check out "Endless Pleasure". This whole cd is great and I can give 100% chance of it being played again many times. Now some may wonder why I am doing a review of a cd that came out on 2004. Well it was released in America on October 9th of 2007. Hence the mention of 6 months above. Yeah, I suck! Sorry about that. Did this Rock My Monkey? Heck yeah it did. Just know that you will need to be in just the right mood for this one. It's 'mood music'. Yeah...that's it. ![]()
