So here I go talking about something I know very little about. I have only owned one Anathema CD ever in my life and that was A Fine Day To Exit about five years ago. Now although I loved that one cd, I lost track of it somewhere and have not had a chance to replace it yet. Now many hate the band since they have totally turned their back on the doom and death scene they started, but I like them better this way. Sometimes this gets so atmospheric that it loses any beat whatsoever, and that is when it loses me. Most of the time though this is really great music to just mellow out to. No one listens to thrash 24 hours a day for long before they have to open up to other styles of music. This is a good choice for just that. This is some great mood music and visual for when you want to create that romantic vibe with a lady or just calm down after a really shitty day at work (as in the days you have to show up). For this show the band brought in several string musicians to fill out the sound. Most of the time I like that kind of thing, but I honestly would have preferred the band more raw. The strings sometimes mellow things out a little too much. They also bring in their female vocalist Lee Douglas for the song “A Natural Disaster”. I think they should use her more often because she really adds to the overall vibe of the music. This whole performance was from the Metal Mania festival in March of this year. Yeah, only a few months from event to a DVD available on Amazon. That is the fine work of Poland’s Metal Mind Productions. My favorite underground DVD producers of all time. As is always the case with a Metal Mind DVD, the production here is simply amazing. The camera work is perfect. No cheesy effects to get in the way of the performance. The audio does seem like it could be more crisp, but that could be just the band’s ‘atmospheric’ style. They end the whole thing with Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”. Kind of interesting since many call their current style a mix of Pink Floyd and Radiohead. Now I have never heard a Radiohead song I liked yet, but I do like Pink Floyd and I do like Anathema. Does this Rock My Monkey? Well, not in the traditional way. This is something I enjoy even though it doesn’t get my blood pumping like most of what I listen to. Myself, I prefer a song like “Empty” to say “Inner Silence”, but all of it is well done for the style they play. The big question here is who should get this. Most of the readers here will not get this stuff. If you have an open enough mind to read the books my wife reviews here on Mondays, then this music would make the perfect backdrop to one of those books. If you like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, or anything involving Stephen O'Malley, then you will love this DVD. If you hate all those bands, then stay clear and just buy the new Black Label Society DVD instead. That is good, too. ![]()
