Recorded just a few months after Jon Nödtveidt’s release from prison ‘The Rebirth of Dissection’ DVD captures the band in all of its glory. With the set list including every song from ‘Storm of the Light’s Bane’ as well as 6 tracks from ‘The Somberlain’ plus a new track ‘Maha Kali’, this DVD offers everything a Dissection fan could ever want.

‘The Rebirth of Dissection’ is the standard concert DVD. With a 90 minute concert, an interview with Jon Nödtveidt, a photo gallery and a video for the track ‘Starless Aeon’ off Rienkaos the focus is really on the concert. The film is high quality and the number of different camera angles really helps make you feel like you are at the show.

Like I said the set list includes the entire album of ‘Storm of the Light’s Band’ and about half of ‘The Somberlain’. The songs are placed in a good order that really helps keep the interest high. Not only that but the cover of Tormentor’s ‘Elizabeth Bathori’ from the mini-CD ‘Where Dead Angels Lie’ and the then newly released track ‘Maha Kali’ really keeps you on your toes.

The sound quality, much like the video quality is very good. The only complaint is the bass is a little quiet but the bass seems to be just a novelty in black metal. The intro tracks are of such quality that it seems as if a keyboardist was there.

Jon’s vocals are nice, reminding me a lot of Abbath of Immortal. The guitar work has plenty of layers as well as some depth. The bass work seems to double the guitars but it is kind of hard to hear. To me the drums are stand out of the album. Tomas Asklund (ex- Dark Funeral) provides a great job replicating old Dissection songs as well as demonstrating his own style on ‘Maha Kali’.

The amount of camera angles also helps keep the viewer watching as they get a view of what each member of Dissection is doing. Many DVDs often fail to show anyone other than the singers and guitarist, but ‘Rebirth’ doesn’t fall into the same trap. Each member gets a good amount of time.

The interview isn’t anything out of the ordinary. Jon Nödtveidt has a crazy look in his eyes for the entire interview that makes it seem like he lost it in jail. The interview touches on his time in jail, the problems within Dissection before his arrest, the reforming of the band, basic interview stuff. There is nothing that a Dissection fan wouldn’t have probably not have known before but still interesting to watch none the less.

‘The Rebirth of Dissection’ is good DVD showcasing the best that Dissection has to offer. If you have a chance I would strongly recommend you pick this up. 8 out of 10.
