Since this is not an authorized piece, there is not a ton of footage from the band. Led Zeppelin are known for being overly protective and very reluctant to have their music used in any retelling of the band by anyone other than themselves. This isn’t too much of a problem since this is more about how the band was formed then sucking off their hits. There are many very interesting clips from bands leading up to Led Zeppelin. That as well as interviews from people close to the band make this somewhat interesting. This talks about how Jimmy Page was initially inspired by Scotty Moore, the guitarist for Elvis Presley. This turned into him being a rather on demand session player and then of course his time in The Yardbirds. Some of you may not know this, but The Yardbirds was pretty much the pre-Led Zeppelin. With a few band member changes, one band became the other. This shows clips from The Yardbirds, as well as some rare recordings from all the other members before they joined Led Zeppelin.

Chris Dreja of The Yardbirds gives much information from his perspective on when The Yardbirds evolved into Led Zeppelin. This is important since he was the last member to leave the band before they changed the name. If you want an outsider’s opinion, his would be the one that could give you that story. There is also a story told here how John Entwistle of The Who was the one to come up with the name Led Zeppelin back when him and Keith Moon where going to leave The Who to form a supergroup that never happened. It’s not until about 45 minutes into this thing that we really hear the first clips of a song from the band. The song is “Dazed And Confused”, but they don’t just play the legendary version we all know and love. Instead they play clips from three different versions from three different bands. One of them sounds more like a Pat Boone song than the one Led Zeppelin did. This is the perfect example of what makes this DVD worthwhile. Without playing that much music from the band at all, they tell one of the most informative tellings of the band’s roots and early history. At times it almost paints the band as a bunch of thieves. This thing could totally change your opinion of the band! Just a listen to the Willie Dixion version of “You Need Lovin’”. Next to that they play a version of the song from a band called The Small Faces. Then they play the Led Zeppelin song “Whole Lotta Love”. After that plays you will have to pick your jaw up off the floor.

So who should buy this thing? I think any Led Zeppelin fan should own this DVD. I think it at least deserves a rental because this thing shocked me as to how much I learned about the band. Did this thing Rock My Monkey? Hell yeah! This is one of the most intriguing DVDs I have reviewed in a very long time.
