When I first got this DVD in the mail it got me excited enough to put it in my stack to review, but not enough to put it in right away. Then the day came to write the review and I notice that this is the lineup that has Ronnie James Dio as the singer! Oh hell yeah, I am excited now. Hearing the man introduce “Long Live Rock And Roll” as this new song that will be on the new album that comes out in January is a little surreal now since it has been so overplayed by his solo band. This lineup also includes Cozy Powell on drums, Bob Daisley on bass, David Stone on the keyboard, and of course the legendary Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. This thing also contains the tour program from this European tour. Very interesting to look at so many decades later. There is also a booklet for this DVD itself. It has some huge ass write up I don’t feel like reading, but it is nice to know it is there. Unlike many DVD releases that are coming out rapid fire now, this seems like it was done with a little thought for the fans to make it worth the money. Now sure this DVD was filmed at the end of the 70’s, so it is full of 70’s camp, cheese, and clichés, but that is what makes it so great. Sure the production isn’t as slick as something filmed in today’s times, but the raw spirit of it all is something I think is missing from today’s live DVD releases. For a package that is being sold for less then $14, this is a pretty damn good deal. Usually endless solos bug the living hell out of me, but for some reason they don’t here. The songs are long as hell with most clocking in at over ten minutes, one clocking in at just short of a half hour, and only 8 songs clocking in at just short of two hours, this thing makes most of today’s prog songs look like pop tunes in comparison. However, where most of today’s prog rock is about as boring as watching a stop motion film on the blooming of a spring flower being filmed in real time, this keeps my attention…and I have the attention span of a kitten on crack! As I said before, there are only eight songs on the main part of the DVD. “Kill The King”, “Mistreated”, “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves”, “Catch The Rainbow”, “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll”, “Man On The Silver Mountain”, “Still I’m Sad”, and “Do You Close Your Eyes”. There are also “bonus features here that are for once worth actually watching (unlike most DVD bonus features). There are videos for “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll”, “Gates Of Babylon”, & “L.A. Connection”. Then we have interviews with both the tour manager Colin Hart (Not the guy from that lame ass show Everwood) and Bob Daisley. So who should buy this thing? If you are a fan of classic rock or a fan of Ronnie James Dio, this thing is a must! For a DVD re-issue this thing is very well done with total respect for the fans. Even if just to see a young (mid 30’s) Dio sing a few of the classics he is so known for. This thing does Rock My Monkey and I think many of you will love it. ![]()
