Produced by the guy who brought us Def Leppard, Back In Black was one of the most eagerly awaited, controversial, and critically dissected albums in history. This DVD is nothing more then a documentary on this enormous release. With almost 50 million copies sold, it is the second best selling album in all of music history (fourth in US history). Amon may hate AC/DC, but I think even he would say that this album is one of the most important pieces of music history ever unleashed on the world. This documentary does a pretty decent job considering it is unofficial and not done by someone like VH1. You have the engineer that worked on the album itself (Tony Platt), vintage interview footage of the band members themselves, and the actual music from the album (instead of some unofficial documentaries that use some shitty unknown band). Now most of the lip service is done by people that had no part in the album, have zero journalistic credentials, and are no more important then you or me, but that is why it is called a “Critical Review” instead of a documentary. Now I learned more about this album from Wikipedia then I did this DVD, so do not get this thinking you will get any rare facts. For example, did you know that Brian Johnson had never had sex at the time he wrote You Shook Me All Night Long? I want to know how the fuck Brian Johnson spent almost a decade in the band Geordie without getting laid? Anyways, other than that this does have some interesting parts. One thing that bugged the hell out of me here is when they have this American redneck looking guy (who is obviously British) with his baseball cap and mullet who insists on singing a few lines of each song a cappella. Then they have two guys that I think are in some AC/DC tribute band I have never heard of (must be a British thing). As with all of these “Under Review” DVD releases, Malcolm Dome is there, but he is starting to bug me less. Am I getting jaded to him or is he getting better at this? At a total running time of almost two hours, the thing is kind of long winded. As much spewing I do about how DVDs should give the fan the most bang for their buck, I think this would be a better DVD if they trim the fat. If this was cut to one hour it would have had a bigger impact. This thing has extras, but most of them are pretty useless. Some lame ass trivia game, text biographies (I don’t slap in a DVD so I can read a fucking book), and a very interesting interview with Tony Platt going into more detail about his viewpoint from the engineer’s seat. So who should get this DVD? If you are a hardcore fan of AC/DC, this would be something you would enjoy. The respect and admiration the makers of this release have for the band is clearly above the ‘cash out’ that some of these releases seem to have. If you are a casual fan, this is pretty close to the VH1 special Ultimate Albums except that you can buy this on DVD. This is a special release that would not be of interest to anyone who is not already a fan and very familiar with the Back In Black release specifically, but for those of us that grew up with this classic this thing kind of brings you back. This thing did Rock My Monkey and I am sure I will be watching it many times again. ![]()
