This DVD is not of the band Sublime. It is a tribute DVD of a bunch of different bands and artists performing Sublime songs. It starts out with footage of the set up of the concert set to a cover of Santeria. It has concert footage interspersed with people talking about Sublime. It is almost a documentary type thing when you choose the play all option from the menu. The talking in between the performances are what gives it that raw style. It has musicians that are performing talking about their own experiences or about Sublime. I like the way this is set up, it makes you feel like you’re getting some insight into what was going on. However, the menu gives you the option to play just the concert, or to go and choose each performance. I think the menu was done really well, because they have little clips of each of the different bands at each selection. There is also a bonus section that has Fishbone’s video of the cover of Date Rape. As far as the performances go, they are all pretty standard. Most of the bands just put a little of their own touches into the songs, but the songs are still obviously Sublime songs. It’s not like you would be able to tell if there are mess ups because the bands just do the Sublime songs all in their own ways. A lot of the people talking mention that Sublime seems to come at you from all different angles, from hip hop to punk to ska to reggae to rock. It was something that people liked that California hip hop style to be able to be mixed with the ska/punk/reggae feel. It seems like Sublime gets respect from all sides, which they should in my opinion. The best thing about the mix up of styles, is that this is reflected in the diversity of the bands performing on one stage. The songs are covered in styles that range from ska to punk to hip hop and beyond. The artists on this DVD are one of the most diverse I could ever imagine for a tribute. I also have to mention the bonus CD that is included in this package. The CD is also a bunch of covers, a lot of the same songs as the DVD, but with different groups and artists. I think it’s fun that so many artists wanted to cover Sublime songs that some had to be on the DVD and others on the CD. It’s also cool that you can take the CD and bump it in your car. If you are at all a fan of Sublime, this DVD/CD combo is a complete must have. Not only for the diversity, but for all the memories that I’m sure the songs on here will bring back, even though they are from bands other than Sublime. ![]()
