So I get this Bad Brains DVD of a legendary recording from when the band played CBGB’s at its peak, way the fuck back in 1982. Being the true old school purist I am, I get all kinds of excited. Then I notice a flyer they put in with it that says that the version we journalists are getting is not the version the public will be buying. We are to get a version where the video and audio are out of sync for the first 20 minutes. Thankfully I think I lucked out and got a good one though, so I am happy as hell. So was there ever a problem or is MVD just really obsessed with quality? The world may never know, but everyone keep your eyes out for any reviews that talk about this defect. I am curious as to who got the bad copies. To make it clear, I do not question the quality of this release. I do however question if there was really a problem at all. Of course maybe I’m just not enough of an audiophile to notice?

Now I must again mention that this thing was recorded on Christmas Eve in 1982. That was a long fucking time ago! Many of you out there had not even been born yet. I was a full blown bible thumper that listened to bands like Barnabas, Rez Band, Stryper, The Darrel Mansfield Band, and a few others. I didn’t start getting into Bad Brains until about ten years later when they had a different vocalist. I still have to admit I don’t recognize most of the songs here. It is however a great thing to be able to be transported back to when this band was one of the hottest new bands to come out of the East Coast punk scene. Most punk footage that gets unearthed from this era looks and sounds like absolute ass, so I was very pleased to see (and hear) that this was recorded with some high quality shit for the time. If you ever wanted to hear what the band sounded like live almost a quarter of a century ago, this is your chance. With classics like “Redbone in The City” (my favorite song on here) & “Pay To Cum”, this thing is a must have for any fan! The extras are pretty useless, but the live show here is worth enough to forgive that.

So who should buy this thing? Well, this band was hardcore before most of the bands today were out of diapers. This is one of the most historically important punk rock DVD I have seen all year. I still like the Rise era of the band best, but that was what I was introduced to the band with. I will however be watching this DVD many times after this review is done. If you think you are punk or “hardcore”, then you need to own this DVD. This thing did Rock My Monkey and any fan of extreme music should like it even more.
