Now I have seen a ton of biopic movies before, but most of them suck ass and can be forgotten only minutes after you are done watching them. This movie really brings you back to the time when Johnny Cash was just getting going. This shows how he came to be the man all of us (I dare anyone to admit they don’t like Johnny Cash) fell in love with. This movie shows how it was his asshole of a father and the death of his older brother that scarred him in just the right way to force him into being the artist that gave us so much great music. This shows the pain of a very imperfect man and how he turned his imperfections into such amazing music. If you feel like a loser, this movie will cheer you right up. Why do I always say that Johnny Cash is more metal than Slayer? Johnny Cash is music for losers, rejects, and outcasts. They are all in some way anthems for the downtrodden. This movie captures perfectly why he captures the hearts of the hardest men around. What makes men hard is pain. A man doesn’t get his heart calloused unless it’s been rubbed the wrong way for a very long time. Slayer can scream about Satan all they want, but Johnny Cash sang about the pain that makes young men into Slayer fans in the first place. Johnny Cash is the original Man In Black and that makes him more metal than anyone. This movie shows how The Man In Black was created.

Now I have heard how many people wanted to dismiss this movie because of the cast. Joaquin Phoenix does such an amazing job that sometimes it is down right creepy. I am pretty sure that some of the lines were synced up with Johnny Cash’s actual voice, but the real shocker is that there is no way you can tell when it is Joaquin Phoenix and when it is Johnny Cash that you hear. Joaquin must have had some brutal time spent with one hard ass voice coach to nail it so damn well. Now most of the time Reese Witherspoon drives me up a fucking wall. She’s so perky you just want to reach into the screen and smack her! On this movie though she does an amazing job. This is by far her best work ever (even if that doesn’t say much). Now there are many characters that Robert Patrick plays that I love. Even when he plays a little bit of an asshole I find him easy to watch. However when he plays Johnny Cash’s father in this movie I just wanted to beat the living fuck out of the bastard! He played the biggest asshole of his career and he makes you hate him more than any human should ever hate another human being. He was an important part of what makes this movie so special.

So who should get this movie? Anyone who has ever enjoyed the music of Johnny Cash. I know movies about legends are pretty much all crap, but this movie is the rare exception. This movie did Rock My Monkey and I can guarantee that I will be enjoying it many times over and over again.
