“Truth and Lies” manages to cover the span of THE ROLLING STONES’ career from their derivation in 1962 through the “Forty Licks” tour, just a few years ago. For as much history is covered, it’s done in the fashion of a faster-paced documentary, which includes quite a few news bites of the respective era. Many should find the vintage news clips are interesting. As a bonus, the DVD is packaged so that the ‘best’ of these clips can be played separately.

Of these news bites, some of the more interesting include the infamous wedding of Mick and Bianca's in Saint Tropez, where Mick nearly stops the wedding as he gets so flustered by the photographers. Another features Mick answering reporters’ questions after one of the multitude of court dramas the band endured in the 1960s having to do with drug busts. Perhaps one of the more humorous sections includes “Swinging Britain”, which offers an overview of fashion and happenings circa 1960s commentary and leads into “Gathers Moss”), which features a promotional film done to help “clean up” the earlier bad boy image of the band. A cleaned up ROLLING STONES depicted as your everyday innocent hitchhikers (no…I’m not kidding) is bound to bring a few laughs. Evidently, this footage was previously difficult to track down.

Surprising is the amount of ROLLING STONES clips that are crammed into the 87 minute feature. As this is yet another “unauthorized” documentary of the band, there isn’t any ROLLING STONES music; however, the over quality and quantity of video is impressive. While this is nothing in comparison to “Gimme Shelter”, it is of noteworthy concerning the amount of information contained in the film and the format. If you’re an old school ROLLING STONES fan, I’d suggest you check “Truth and Lies” out.
