So a few months ago I asked Escapi to send me a few DVDs that we never got to review. This one has the visual footage from the Candlemass live cd. I figured this out while I was watching it. The concert started and I was having a massive case of Deja Vu. I had heard this audio a million times before. It was interesting to see the visual footage that goes along with it. I feel like a little bit of a Noob, because I didn’t know the entire concert was filmed like this. Back when I had my video show in the early 90’s, I had the video single for ‘Dark Reflections’. I played that thing to death for a couple years, but I figured that they only filmed enough to do the single and that was it. Glad to see I was wrong.

Now don’t think for a second that all you get is some old concert footage being re-released on the DVD format. You also get a second disc full of high end bootleg quality live footage from right after the band had their short lived reunion. This is mixed with the standard interviews and backstage footage that always comes with a DVD. So don’t let the $25 asking price scare you away, because you get a good amount of shit for that price. Now these guys are Swedish and they do talk a lot in their native tongue. So this means you will be stuck reading a lot, but there is good news. The producers of this DVD package had their heads screwed on tight enough to get the sub-titles to not only be turned on, but they seem to be pretty damn accurate as well. I have had several DVD’s of bands from other countries, tons of interview footage in some language I don’t understand, and no sub-titles. This has even been done a few times with almost no live footage, which could make a DVD totally worthless, so I am very glad when someone gets it right as they have here. There is also band commentary that you can turn on if you get tired of watching the DVD in it’s traditional version.

So some of you may not know who the fuck Candlemass is. Well, they are one of the longest running doom metal bands around. They are also one of the best by far. Nowadays there are a ton of doom bands that think it’s real dark to throw a bunch of half baked cookie monster impressions over the top. Candlemass are thankfully above that. Messiah has the perfect doom metal vocals in my not so humble opinion. Sad to say he and the band are back to not speaking again and the reunion is over once more. This makes this DVD package all the more important for you all to get. This DVD did Rock My Monkey and I am sure I will be watching it many times again after this review is posted. Forget the pseudo-doom, death-doom, or any other unpure form and just grab a slice of the kings!
