Judas Priest is a metal band, Iron Maiden is a metal band, Merciful Fate is a metal band, and Force of Evil is a metal band in the same vein. Classic metal with catchy riffs, head banging verses, tasteful guitar solos and corny lyrics. Force of Evil’s ‘Evil Comes…Alive’ delivers a near masterpiece of a DVD capturing all of those things of the bands SECOND show.

‘Evil Comes…Alive’ is one of the better concert DVD’s that I have seen. With the exception of the Dissection DVD, I don’t think that I have seen a DVD that has the band playing as tight as Force of Evil with so little live experience together. The camera work is great and gives each member plenty of screen time. There must have been 5-6 cameras covering the band the entire show. The sound is great with the exception of one thing: Hank Shermann’s guitar is extremely quiet. During the few solos that he has it is nearly impossible to hear what he is playing. It doesn’t seem to be just a problem on the DVD either; the other members have awkward looks on their faces when ever Shermann’s solos come up as if they couldn’t hear him either.

The guitar work (when you can hear it) is top notch. Not to anyone’s surprise as both Shermann and Michael Denner were both members of Merciful Fate. Held down by bassist Hal Patino, riff after devastating riff just hits you through the entire set. The culmination of the DVD has to be the Merciful Fate covers “Curse of the Pharaohs” and “Hell on Earth.” Both capture the dynamic range the band can cover without sounding stupid or too cheesy. Singer Martin Steene has a great voice, except when he tries to hit higher notes. He also seems to have his voice in a permanent falsetto, which gets rather annoying after a bit. Drummer Bjarne T. Holm is rather original with his drum beats, adding yet another dimension to the band.

The other parts of the DVD are the standard DVD fillers with live footage from the bands first gig, photo gallery and some studio footage. But nothing else really captures the attention like the concert does. The interviews cover from the formation of the band to the bands feelings on recording only their second show. It is kind of weird to see how young vocalist Steene is compared to the rest of his band mates. Every other band member is nearly twice his age, which at the time of the DVD was 23.

Overall, Force of Evil’s ‘Evil Comes…Alive’ is defiantly something for the classic metal heads to look out for and pick up. Everything in your favorite N.W.O.B.H.M bands (and Merciful Fate / King Diamond) is packed into Force of Evil and refined, 8 out of 10.
