“One Man… 48 cities… 100 bands… What could possibly go wrong?!” is what the cover of Wake Up Screaming said. A Van’s Warped Tour Documentary about Peta2’s Jason Bayless and his absolutely righteous crusade (yes, I am a vegan) to inform as many people as he can about living a compassionate lifestyle by way of abstaining from using animal products (i.e. meat, dairy, poultry, leather, furs, etc). He tours the country meeting kids and hanging out with rock stars to spread his message. Jason Bayless is a Texan who lived on a farm as a child and helped his parents lead their livestock into trucks headed for slaughterhouses. As an adult, he has made it his life’s quest to expose as many people as he can to the horrible lives that animals live on large corporate farms from birth until death. He hangs out with musicians that are already vegetarian/vegan and also challenges other stars to become one for a week or a month just to “try it out”, in hopes that he can turn another person over to a more healthy and compassionate lifestyle. On his trip to Texas, on the Warped Tour, Jason goes home to see his mom on the farm that he grew up on and she shows pictures of him when he was young, along with all of the press clippings with him in the paper where he is shown protesting places that treat animals cruelly. He then talks about the farm that he lived on growing up and how he is glad that the land his family lives on is no longer a farm (his mother is now a vegetarian) and contributing to the terrible price animals have to pay for human consumption. My favorite part of this documentary was when Jason and some Peta2 members went into Kentucky Fried Chicken establishments and showed videos to customers documenting the inhumane conditions that the chickens that are farmed for KFC go through, with narration by Rev. Al Sharpton (there is an alternate video narrated by Pamela Anderson if you want to listen to a big chested woman talk about it instead of Rev Al). Another cool part of the documentary is when Jason and John from Goldfinger went and protested the store, Wet Seal, for selling rabbit fur (one of the petitions the Peta2 booth had at Warped Tour 05 was a petition to get Wet Seal to stop selling animal furs). There was also another protest against Covance for animal cruelty. Jason dressed up like a monkey and two other guys were mock-torturing him (Covance got into a lot of trouble after being investigated later on). Really cool stuff! The special features part of the DVD had a video of the premier of Wake Up Screaming at SXSW (Southwest by Southwest film and interactive festival) with some bands that are from the documentary there to support it. There are also some crappy interviews of some bands with vegetarian/vegan members and some live performances of really terrible screamo bands (Silverstein, Emery, Hawthorne Heights and other bands not worth naming). The outtakes were somewhat amusing (Ron from Opiate For The Masses is a pretty damn funny guy!) but what was really important in the special features section are the PETA public service announcements, featuring “Meet Your Meat” which documents the treatment of turkeys, chickens, cattle and pigs on farms and in slaughterhouses; “Chew On This” with a lot of GREAT reason’s to stop eating meat and using animal products; “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” narrated by Rev Al Sharpton with footage of how horrible the life is for a chicken living on a corporate farm. I’ll give this documentary 4 out of 5 stars, because the message behind it is extremely important for all people that want to change they way they live their lives. I plan to expose this DVD to anybody and everybody that I can, at least for the Public Service Announcements in the special features section.
