loudQUIETloud is a documentary about the reuniting of the Pixies, one of the most influential, yet unrecognized, bands in the history of rock n roll. Countless bands have been influenced by the Pixies, directly and indirectly. Kurt Cobain once told Rolling Stone magazine, “I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies”, when speaking about Nirvana’s massively successful song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, a song that brought to light one of the most unique rock movements ever. You can turn on any alternative rock radio station and hear the Pixies legacy in almost every band that gets played.

This DVD has everything that you would expect when it comes to a documentary about a band that reunites and goes on tour. Interviews with all of the band members about why the band broke up, egos, anger, addiction, life after the band, family life, other musical projects, etc. What sets this apart from all of the other documentaries is the weirdness of it. The band members don’t talk to each other very much, but they seem to genuinely like each other in spite of their lack of communication. There are scenes in the DVD where everybody is sitting in the same room and none of them are talking except for a couple small talk conversations. There is no trying to hash out the past with this band. There is very little drama. The only drama that happens, gets nipped in the bud very quickly and the band goes on again doing what they are supposed to be doing.

The best part about watching this DVD (besides the absolutely killer music) was the fact that they sold out EVERY venue that they played. The Pixies, from 1988 to 1994, enjoyed only moderate success. This reunion tour was a huge financial success. I was so happy to see them finally get the recognition they deserved, at least in the financial department. All of the live footage shows rabid fans in absolutely PACKED rock venues.

Everything about this DVD is cool! Easy navigation when you put this in your DVD player. The band sounds as tight as ever. The layout of the case is sweet. When you open it, you find that the DVD case is made of clear plastic so that you can see through it to view a picture of the band on stage playing while you check out the cool 15 page booklet that comes inside. The documentary is totally solid and I enjoyed every minute of it. The bonus scenes were equally entertaining and I wish that they had just thrown the footage into the documentary, instead of putting them in the extras section. The commentary on the DVD was extremely boring, though, and unless you want to be bored to death, I highly suggest not watching it. The only other problem I have with this DVD is the fact that there are no full songs to watch and listen to. Great music all over the DVD during the filming of their live sets, but I wanna see less talk and more rock damnit!

The only thing keeping this DVD from getting 5 out of 5 stars is because of a lack of full songs anywhere. I’m sure that I will watch this a couple more times in the future, though. Any Pixies fan should own this for sure.
