Nirvana’s album “In Utero” is near and very dear to my heart. It is, by far, my favorite Nirvana album. I love all albums by Nirvana, but In Utero is the darkest and the heaviest, the sickest and the most vulnerable, very raw, very deep and very bleak. I love everything about this album: The guitar tone, Dave Grohl’s powerful drums, the way Kurt Cobain seems to dig from the bowels of his soul to scream his heart out.

In Utero came out at a time in my life where I was just getting interested in music, back when I was 12 or 13. I remember thinking how cool it was that so many bands from my home state of Washington were getting recognized for making great music. Even a young kid can understand how special that is. Nirvana was the band that got me interested in music, got me into playing guitar and got me wanting to find friends that are of like minds. I soon started finding all of the information that I could on the band because I wanted to know everything about them. I still to this day read anything that I see about Nirvana.

When I started watching this documentary, I was really excited because I had hoped that I might find even more perspective on one of the most influential bands of all time. I was soon disappointed because the guys that were the “ esteemed experts” didn’t even know as much as I did about the band. They got some of their facts wrong and other times they would say things like “I’m not sure but…” which annoyed me to no end. I didn’t learn anything about the recording of this album that I didn’t already know. Maybe it is because there is nobody that knows more about a band than an obsessed teenager… and an obsessed teenager I was.

When doing a documentary about an album, I believe that it is important to touch on every song. Nothing should be skipped over. I was extremely pissed off when “Very Ape” and “Milk It” ended up getting passed over. The song names didn’t even get mentioned! Those are two of my favorite songs on In Utero and they completely dismissed them! Nay! They completely ignored them! I understand that some songs get more attention than others when making something like this, but when you spend 60 minutes talking about an album, I would think that you could take a minute or two to consider ALL of the songs. I just have a hard time respecting this documentary when you are going to skip over a song with the lyric “Look on the bright side, suicide” while talking about an album which could be considered a musical suicide note.

There were bright spots on this documentary though. There is interview footage of Jack Endino (producer of the album “Bleach”), Chad Channing (former drummer), Tracy Marander (Kurt’s longtime girlfriend before Courtney Love), and the author of one of my most favorite books ever: Charles Cross (“Heavier Than Heaven”). I enjoyed seeing the live footage in the background of the movie and the song clips.

There is a bonus feature entitled “Unplugged in New York: A Classic Album?” which talks about whether or not the acoustic show that was recorded for MTV can be considered a classic album. I believe that it is, but it is also my least favorite Nirvana album, because I prefer Nirvana when they are electric and aggressive. Other bonus features include an interactive quiz about Nirvana as well as biographies on everybody involved with the DVD.

“Nirvana- In Utero: A Classic Album Under Review” is a mediocre at best documentary on one of the greatest albums ever. It does not do it justice, but for a Nirvana freak like me, I am still happy to own it. It will go into my already extensive Nirvana collection and I will cherish it along with everything else Nirvana that I own.

I’m not sure that I would tell anybody that is a Nirvana fan to buy this unless you are an avid, rabid, obsessive fan like I am… With that being said, if you are a die-hard fan and try to get anything and everything that has something to do with Nirvana, then by all means buy it. I enjoyed watching it, even if I felt that I knew more than the experts.
