Check for some Les Claypool merchendise by Clicking Here! Although closer stylistically to Primus, this is still some pretty tripped out jam shit. Here things do seem a little more focused and closer to actual songs then anything I have heard from any of Les’ solo outings before. Don’t be confused though, this is not about playing actual songs. This is like Primus on acid. There are a few songs on here and as usual, when Les does an actual song it is damn good. “Rumble of the Diesel” (off the latest Of Whales and Woe release) was the first one to catch my attention. I have no idea what it is about this song but both me and the wife thought this one stuck a little from the ones before it. “Long In The Tooth” (I believe from Purple Onion), was pretty good too. A few of the songs will remind you of older Primus songs. From the very first note of “D’s Diner” you can’t help but be reminded of “Shake Hands With Beef”. In fact, many might start even singing lyrics from that specific song over the music. It’s that close! The cadence of “Lust Stings” sounds exactly like “American Life”. Funny thing about that is that they play part of “American Life” right before this one. Was he trying to show how similar the two songs are? Who knows with Les. He is a strange man and we like that. On the navigation side of things, I love the fact that the “Play All” button works so well. Especially since the remote on our living room DVD player has never worked that well (and just got worse). I was thrown by the animated set lists that show up right before a city’s performance is shown. At first I thought it was the menu, but then the live footage starts up and my world is better for it. So for the fan that only likes the hits from Primus, stay away. If you love all of Les Claypool’s post Primus material however, this is some of the best. It is also the closest to Primus of the non-Primus material (if that makes any sense). This has highs and lows, but there were a few times that it did Rock My Monkey. There were also times that it faded into background noise. Will I ever play this again after this review is done? Probably, but not near as much as I will the Best of Primus collection “They Can't All Be Zingers”. ![]()
