U2 The DVD Collector’s Box includes two Discs. The first one being “An Unforgettable Journey” and the second one titled “Bono – God’s Favourite Son.” I will state right off the bat that unless you are a huge fan of U2 and you want to own everything put out about them or by them, this box will be a waste of your money.

First off, neither DVD contains any music by the band U2. The first disc consists mostly obviously of their story about coming up and getting big locally and then going international. However none of the band members or even their manager is in the film. It is an unauthorized documentary, mostly consisting of little stories and tidbits from old managers, old friends, and people from around Dublin who were there at the time U2 was formed. There are some neat little stories about the members of the band, and it talks about the band’s first two names, before they became U2. It talks about their first show in the school auditorium. It has a clip with their old teacher who took responsibility for them to be able to practice after school and would lock up after them.

Of course no U2 story would be complete without an utter ass kissing about the bands philanthropy. I’m not lessening the impact this band has had on the entire world, and I think they have done some very wonderful very great things in a philanthropic way, but the fact that they are lauded for it constantly actually begins to take their contributions down a notch. The only interesting tidbit about the band that I got out of this disc was that they talk about Adam’s bass playing being less than stellar and that it caused the Edge to play his guitar a little differently to work around Adam’s shortcomings, and the outcome being an example of using weaknesses to become stronger.

The second disc is supposed to be about Bono. And it is, to a certain degree. It talks a little bit about him growing up, and it talks about his wife and marriage to her. But most of the information on the second disc is just a re-hash of the first. It talks a little bit more about his lyrics, and someone says they believe that Bono expresses a lot of personal emotions in a way that it can apply to each individual. I personally agree, but I don’t think it’s some amazing feat. Most lyric writers, if they are good, do just the same.

To sum up, I would say if you are U2’s biggest fan (ha ha, get in line – I bet they have about 5 gazillion “biggest fans”) then you might want to pick this up just to add to your collection. If you are looking for a DVD about the band U2 including some music and live clips, this is not the one.
