This DVD about Pink Floyd’s classic album “Meddle” is how a DVD should be put together. I was immediately drawn into the story of the band and how they got started in the psychedelic movement. There are some quotes from the band members themselves, but all of the interviews are with people that were either in the industry at the time or have extensively studied that era of music.

One aspect I really liked about this DVD was that the first half hour or so was spent on the history of the band, and all of the albums leading up to “Meddle”. They talk about recording at Abbey Road. They talk about “Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” as being one of the quintessential psychedelic albums. It talks about the breakdown of Syd Barret after Pink Floyd’s first US Tour, and how Roger Waters then became the primary songwriter and leader of the band.

The story then continues on. “Saucerful of Secrets” was a mixed bag album, “Atom Heart Mother” a study in the jam band aspect of Pink Floyd. By the time they recorded the track “Echoes” for the “Meddle” album, it is said that David Gilmour finally felt comfortable stepping up and writing most of the music. If you are at all a Pink Floyd fan, this DVD is great for samples from each of these albums, and the way you can hear the progression of the band and each individual as each album is released.

Once it begins to talk about the album “Meddle” about 30 minutes in, they go through the album track by track giving a bit of background on the songs, and about how each track came together. There is also a tidbit about a suggestion for the album cover, but they decided to go with an ear under water instead. I like the way they break down each track and tell the viewers how things came about. I am a big fan of back story, and on this DVD you get all the back story and then some.

They talk about “Meddle” being the end of an era. There are glimpses of what is to come from this band, but once “Dark Side of the Moon” was released, Pink Floyd was a different band. Gilmour himself is quoted as saying “Dark Side of the Moon” is when Pink Floyd got their focus. “Meddle” is where they found themselves on their way. “Dark Side of The Moon” is where they proved they had arrived.

I highly recommend this DVD to any fans of Pink Floyd. I would recommend this mostly because of the fact that the story of the band up until this album is told in a complete and concise manner. The editing is done well, the clips of music, and quotes from the band members themselves make this a complete story. A story any Pink Floyd fan is sure to enjoy.
