In today’s times I find it annoying when band’s release a live DVD every couple years. It makes the whole live DVD thing less special. 2005’s Castles and Dreams was a pretty decent DVD set and I liked it. Yet I still honestly rolled my eyes when I heard they where doing the live DVD thing again so soon. To prepare for an interview I put the disc in anyways. I was shocked that I liked it better then Castles And Dreams. There are a few things that made it better. I think the production is better and the sound quality seems to be more crisp. The band seems to be tighter as well. The song selection seems to be a bit more selective and more to my tastes. I only own their Christmas cd, but the songs here grab my ear more for some reason. Yup, you guessed it. I am not a hardcore fan of Blackmore’s Night. I am a much more casual fan. So I am harder to please them other people giving a review of this release.

One complaint I just noticed though is that unless the house is completely quiet, I had to blast the volume to an uncomfortable level to be able to hear Candice during the talking parts. Even with the music at an almost painful level, I still could not make out what she was saying. This is the only complaint I have on the entire thing. I do remember from a previous run through that she has some pretty funny moments where she teases husband and rock legend Ritchie Blackmore about his dark and brooding personality. These are some highly entertaining moments that should be heard better. Not sure if better mic technique could fix this or something done in post, but it is something that should be looked into before the next one.

In my interview with Candice, I was told that the people at SPV have once again gone overboard (in a good way) with the packaging on this thing. Although I only got the two discs in a plain plastic case, you fans will get an elaborate box set filled with stunning artwork. It almost makes me want to get the retail version!

Now for those of you who think this is going to be some lame all acoustic thing, not a chance. Want to hear Ritchie Blackmore in a full on electric guitar jam session like you haven’t heard him do in decades? It is here! He shows that he can still wail on the axe better then most of the players half his age. This is probably why I like this DVD more then the first one. It is a rollercoaster ride through the many faces of this band. The first two disc package is great if you just want the straight up Renaissance thing, but this is for the fans that want something a little bit more. There is a majority of Renaissance music, but there is also rock, blues, folk, and more.

Did this Rock My Monkey? Very much so. In some ways I like the eclectic mix of musical styles, but other times I kind of wanted it to be purely Renaissance music. But I guess that is what the Castles And Dreams two disc set is for. I may have to pull that out. Now if only the next DVD they release is of their two Christmas releases done live? Now that would be something I would love!
