Darkthrone was given a little Flak for not doing the album entirely Black and White like most of their others. As a fan I believe this is the best album they have recorded to date. There are others very close, and I like almost everything I have heard on all of their official recordings, except the vocals on a few songs of their Panzerfaust realase.Plague Wielder though is a perfect example of Black Metal at it's finest.Definitely not for the timid listeners of pop culture and Pepsi commercials.
I place this album above all their others for many reasons, one being the frequent pace changes of which there is not as much or too much like some of their other work, which by the way includes a very technical Death Metal album from the near beginnings of this bands creation. Also the steadiness of the guitar rythyms on this album do not jerk you around in the least. It is listenable and ferocious at the same time.Nocturno has a definite style distinctly his own although at times you can hear the Hellhammer/Celtic Frost leanings throughout the span of their work on songs from time to time.
The vocals done on this album are raw and confident.I would definitely not call it singing. The lyrical theme of this album in particular always seem to keep my attention no matter how many listenings. They paint a picture of a grim cold world where no matter how much you resist you will fail, yet also being unwilling to give up the fight.
Beginning with the opening track "Weakling Avenger" inserts feelings of paranoia, despair, and hopelessness..continuing on to "Raining Murder" Fenriz keeping quick pace throughout most of the songs at his usual breakneck tempo's.Very amazing guitar work in the sense that it is not overly complicated but still fast enough to remain formidable without any fancy guitar solo's anywhere. The lyrics are not made to rhyme as much as to make one think as in this sample:
"I curse the skies
while the ground slides away
sinking nowhere fast
scorching upstream road
the chisel melts
and darkness falls forever"
Followed by "Sin Origin" then "Command" This album seems to keep most of the lyrical content of each song more closely related to each other then they have done on previous or later releases. Most songs seem to be about futility yet not giving in to it no matter that the result will still be to lose.Like a never ending battle against an indomitable foe.And you can very much hear that in this music..just totally fucking relentless drumming and guitar work
somehow managing to keep some harmony at the same time.Starting out as a Death Metal band,Darkthrone has gone on to be one of the most enduring Black Metal bands around.
Hail His Infernal Majesty
"Unholy Black Metal"
