Well my expectations are pretty big for this release. I had only heard two songs off of the album before getting my copy, so I was a bit nervous as I unwrapped the plastic. Sometimes this can ruin an album especially if it's the stronger tracks on a record. Well it didn't effect Six Feet Under's newest release that is for sure.
-Doomsday-
So we start with Doomsday, the track I have listened to so many times before getting my dirty hands on the disc. Right at 1:49 is when I first fell in love with this song. I just love the whole slowed down groove it has. It makes me want to fire up a joint on the spot. I really like the instruments behind Chris' vocals when he is pounding out the brutality. "Death is now on its way, waiting, to end today". "Sludge of the human waste, you will have died in vane". Just love it.
-Thou shalt KILL-
Thou shalt KILL! Starts out very "Maximum Violence" like. I felt like I know this song. Then I realize it's better to describe it as hearing one of your favorite SFU songs for the first time all over again. I can feel the familiarity of the track but at the same time it's totally uncharted terroritory. It Definately had me banging my head from the get go.
-Zombie Executioner-
Ah yes! Another SFU song that out does itself. It gives me the best of both worlds. It starts with a nice groove, then it just completely rips your fucking head off only to ducktape it back on when it slows back down. Then you get your head ripped off again, only to have it nail gunned on this time. My favorite lyric from this song is "The heart is still beating even after death.". Knowing my luck, my heart won't work right until I'm dead.
-The edge of the hatchet-
So who came ready for the edge of the hatchet? I sure didn't expect this. This track is the butter of this album to me. I don't want to sound out of place but this motherfucker is fun. By far, it is in my top 3 for my favorite SFU songs. It makes me want to just break out all the anger inside of me. It's like a drug just helping you release your frustrations. I imagine I'll have some psychotic dream tonight and this will be my soundtrack for my escape. I just love how I thought the song was over and it wasn't. That was a nice fucking touch. This track gets me so fucking pumped. I might just have to go out and kill somebody.
-Bled to death-
To me, this should have been the second track on the album. It sounds like the perfect partner to conclude Doomsday. Pretty creepy lyrics. It definately reminds me of a serial killer. Even the lead sounds like it was written by some maniac son of a bitch (no offence Steve) ready for another kill. I really can't say much else besides this is just a killer song and that's in a literal sense.
-Resurrection of the Rotten-
Hell yeah! Another song that has the "Maximum Violence" vibe with a little bit of "Warpath". I'm totally digging this tune because it feels like familiar territory. You never know what SFU will throw at you. You feel familiar, then you listen and you don't know where the song will go musically or vocally. I mean shit, Steve throws a sweet lead in when you don't expect it and it makes perfect sense.
-As the blade turns-
Did the coroner have a difficult time determining your cause of death? If you answered yes then you know why. This is homicidal genius. This song was well written lyrically and musically. This is the shit that belongs in horror movies or criminal investigation shows. This shit is genius. Yes I know that I said "this" alot. Right now as I'm typing this, some assholes car alarm is going off. I don't know the fucktard or what car it is. I can tell you at this moment this song is for him. Nothing else to say.
-The Evil Eye-
When my eyes are glassed over from the Chronic, I get "The Evil Eye". This is going to be put on my newly revised pot smoking cd. It just seems right. Songs that are about murder and have a good feel musically are just the greatest for extra curricular activities. If I was a psychologist analyzing this song, I would try to have the man that wrote these lyrics locked up for life in prison. I keep thinking it can't get any better than the current song I'm listening to at the moment. Then I'm shocked and awed again. SFU just won't stop delivering on this record and better yet this song.
-In A Vacant Grave-
I love to taste the smell of death! Doesn't everybody? If "The edge of the hatchet" is the butter of this album, then this would be the bread. Come on, most guitarists who give you a lead within the first 10 seconds sure as fuck don't give a sweet solo later on. Everything makes sense on the song. In your empty tomb it's to late for you!
-Ghosts of the undead-
It's kinda weird listening to this song after seeing the video so many times. I have to use my own imagination for this one, which can be a very scary thing if you were to be in my head. This was the right song to end the album with. I'm glad it wasn't something that was fast and pummeled you to death as the listener. Everything just fades out and then it's over and I feel completely satisfied.
-Album Artwork-
I do like the choice of not having a bunch of busy stuff behind the lyrics in the booklet, that was nice on the eyes. Greg looks fucking sick as hell in that picture! I love it!
-Over all thought-
I must first congratulate Chris on a well job producing this album. Unlike "13", this is done perfectly. I really couldn't bitch about "13"'s production quality just because I have excellent quality audio equipment and know how to adjust an EQ if need be. Plus your vocals just killed this time around. Terry's bass work was amazing, it sounded great and was never slouched. Greg you are the fucking man on the drums, you are the best. Steve, man, what can I say? I love your tone, your leads are great and not to flashy.
Honestly, this release surprised me. I'm not used to loving every song of a record. I mean, some songs have to grow on me. With "Commandment", that has changed. Hands down, this is the best release from SFU yet. This to me is the "Reign in Blood" of SFU's music catalog. Yes, I was scared of the idea of them going to the studio with nothing written yet. Seemed like suicide to me.
If anybody wants to comment on this, feel free. I had a blast listening to this album. I want to personally thank the band for ripping my fucking head off. You guys have proved over the years that Death Metal just doesn't have to be just about blast beats. It can have groove as well.
Thanks,
Bobby
