This is a hard one for me because this is my favorite genre of music... Well... no, its not. AMON AMARTH. AA is my second most favorite band ever. after that it gets foggy cuz there are so many great bands.

Arch Enemy

In Flames (Before they turned to shit when they released Reroute to Remain.)

Dark Tranquility (Based on what I've heard from Damage Done.)

Death (Their material from Individual Thought Patterns to Sound of Perseverance can be considered melodic death metal.)

A few others.

I don't really listen to melodeath

BUT

from ones that I do -

At the Gates
Hypocrisy
The Black Dahlia Murder (if you count that as like melodeathcore or something)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this.

Vish

they did go nu metal for a while, but Come Clarity is more melodeath and less nu metalish... anders vocals are what is mainly nu metal, everything else is pretty damn melodeath.

i never really got into in flames but then i realized it was because i was listening to the new shit. their old stuff is good though.

WTF makes a melodic death metal band just that? I have never noticed anything melodic about Amon Amarth.

you obviously arent paying attention, then. every one of their songs are EXTREMELY melodic.

I didn't ask if I was paying attention. I was asking what makes a melodeath band just that.

Yes the songs have some melody in them, big fucking deal. So any death metal band that has some melody gets lump up in the melodeath catogory? I just get tired of the bullshit descriptions for all these bands. Hope I'm not coming of as some rude prick just trying to get some answers.:bj

Melodic death metal contains more melodic guitar riffs, solos, and acoustic guitar work than death metal. It also contains more understandable lyrics as well as coherent singing along with traditional death grunt vocals. The song structures are generally more progressive, using diverse themes throughout the songs.

^^^ stole this from wikipedia. it's tough trying to explain it. you just kinda "know".

Ok thanks!

I'll stick with Vehemence as my favorite then.

too late for that, but im getting used to that from you. fuzzay is right... it is hard to really explain the genre of music, but the quote she used from wikipedia is pretty acurate. i dont even think that the word "death metal" should be used in the genre for most melodeath bands, because i think they are more or less thrash bands with more extreme vocals... and pay a bit more attention to melody. amon amarth is one of those bands that truly is a melodic death metal band... they got the death metal vocals, death metal riffing... but are ridiculasly melodic at the same time. perfect band.

as far as comparing melodic death to other genres...i dunno i always thought it was mostly thrash mixed with death, neo-classical, and progressive (depending on the melo death band). certain melo bands are more death (such as amon amarth), some are neo-classicalish (such as skyfire), ect. so i guess you can really debate it on the band and not the melodic death genre as a whole. still, the basic structure is there.

I think I remember having a conversation like this with you before fuzz. If i had boobs I'd never leave the house. :rotfl On the topic I find most Death Metal too over done now a days. Give me some old school Carcass or some Melodic death I'm happy. Melodic Death just a natural way for the genre to progress. As much as I like screaming/growling knowing the band can doing other things than scream is one thing I look for in bands. Now saying that means I don't take away from the skill it takes to do the vocals for death metal it takes a lot of practice to get death metal right no matter what sub genre it's put under.

Vehemence, to me, ends all melodic dm as we know it. Sure there are other great bands, but none so much as Vehemence on "Helping The World To See"....they managed to make melo-death listenable to my ears. The others out there.....well....not precisely my thing, aside from Amon Amarth, The Crown, and At The Gates.

In Flames isn't on your list? Their most recent few albums have been crap, but The Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony are all great albums.

Also, I can't recommend Dismember enough. They're more toward the old school brutal side, but a lot of their stuff is very melodic.

The singer of In flames annoys the shit of me not as bad as the douche bag that sings for The haunted. Still i don't see myself buying any of their cds since i only like a select few of In flames' songs. I can't pick a best melodeath band but it's a toss up between Dark Tranquility and Hypocrisy and Vehemence. I like all these bands equally for different reasons but they all rule in my opinion.

Anders Friden sounded good until Reroute to Remain. As for The Haunted's vocalist, he sounds okay as a vocalist, but I've noticed that most people here think he's a total jackass whenever he talks on stage.

He really started to lose it though around Colony. Instead of the powerful growl from The Jester Race he started doing higher pitched vocals, and that horrible Jonathan Davis whisper voice that he made into his main style. A shame too, cause he sounded great on the first 2 In Flames albums he sang on.

Colony is my favorite IF album in all respects, but I agree that Anders sounded great on the first IF albums and that he made an extremely stupid decision when he thought that imitating Jonathan Davis was a good idea.

Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream or was it Stream of conciousness?? I furgot but it is very excellent

The new Enslaved-Ruun would fit in here..I wouldn't call it Black Metal like their older stuff..cool music

Like An Everflowing Stream is their first album, and is a masterpiece. There's melody in most of their songs from the first couple albums, and they got even more melodic and catchy from the 3rd album on. Their latest couple are especially melodic and brutal.

Dudes!!! I finally get to see Amon Amarth live on the Sounds Of The Underground this year....

After a decently sized fight, my wife and I agree to go to the event this year in Houston, the day before our Wedding Anniversary....we'll do something feminine the next day to please her.

But I'm STOKED to finally see AMON AMARTH and have my wife see GWAR....who she secrectly enjoys but won't admit out loud.....

amon amarth is so important to see live. one of the best live bands that i have ever seen. sotu isnt coming any where near seattle this year, so im extremely bummed. closest that it is coming is salt lake city, ut. sotu NEVER comes to washington anymore... atleast the last couple years anyhow, and it pisses me off this year because amon amarth is my favorite band (as far as bands that are still together go). maybe they'll make a jump over to seattle on an off day or something, i dont want to miss them.
