View Full Version : Death metal's origins?

As many of you know, a certain so-called expert on death metal left this site recently and did so without answering my question to him about how death metal really got started.

With that said, I hope that someone here can answer the question. Here's the conversation that the question resulted from:

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH everyone credits Death for inventing a genre that was already in the works when they came along. And Death, while a very good band and one of my favorites, were only dm for a very short period of time in comparison to most death metal bands. Basically the first 3 Death albums were actually death metal, everything after was thrash mixed with traditional.

Okay, here's an area where I have something to learn. Until a few minutes ago, I thought that Death, Pestilence and Possessed were the bands who emerged during the 80's thrash scene, liked that style, wanted to do something more extreme with it and thus invented death metal. Now I'm sure that more bands were around during this time that paved the way for the genre, but once again, I thought that what I previously said was the gist of how it got started. With that said, if that is indeed not the case, what is?

damn, i've been slackin up in this house!
the new job has got me clockin nearly 30 hours of OT a paycheck. i'm so damn busy i barely have time to wipe my ass let alone sniff my fingers!

so, as far as the topic at hand. SUAD has the right idea, just the wrong delivery. you get much more results with honey than with feces! anyways, in the late seventies, early eighties, there were a bunch of punk bands that were fed up with the half assed stylings of bands like the sex pistols, clash and the ramones and decided to take punk into a loud, politically charged, brutal direction. bands like chaos uk, amebix and crass to name a few. well 'round 81 a group of young gents in england decided that this was a great start, but not quite up to par with what they believed music should be. they decided to write hyperblast songs about humanities disgraces and political downfalls and play them louder and faster than any music had ever been played before. and as a matter of fact, this band still holds the guiness world record for the shortest recorded song ever! need a hint? yees sir! that would be napalm death.of course this wasn't quite death metal yet. it was way to fast, politically charged and sloppy for death metal. but in amongst the ND crew was the base foundation musicians who would take the sheer intensity of ND and set clinical medical style gore lyrics to the noise. this became carcass. and if you haven't heard reek of putrifaction or symphonies of sickness, you really need to! this is where death metal really got it's foundation. by this time, tape trading was starting to pick up steam in the underground, and young musicians around the world were starting to say "hey! this kicks ass over the speed and thrash that's is already out there. let's incorporate this with more technical aspects." and thus what we know and love as death metal was born. as for who officially started it. *shrug* tis a subject of debate. the morbid angel crew was makin tunes before chuck jumped in the arena, but death was one of the first to throw fully splattered lyrical qualities out there. possessed of course coined the term "death metal" on their first album 7 churches, but it is debatable as to whether that album is really death metal or speed metal. i don't think there will ever be an actual definitive answer to who started death metal. it was more of a collective approach to music that crept into society like rigor mortis and has never left!
and i for one will make sure it never does...

I agree fully with Deathboy, that the origin of DM is a collective group of bands rather than just 1 band, and there's plenty of debate, especially nowadays, as to whether bands like Possessed (since they were brought up)were DM or thrash. For back in the day when it came out, stuff like "The Seven Churches" was among the heaviest stuff out there, and was considered death metal. Once bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation started being cloned in the early 90s the definition of DM became bands like them, and since Possessed, heavy though they are, have more in common with thrash than they do with Suffocation style DM, aren't considered DM anymore. They laid the foundation, certainly, along with Death, Napalm Death, and the like, and they were influenced by Venom before them but made it harder and faster, just like the bands that came after them did.

that site, plus it's fellow sites in flametown, are a great way to vent steam. and learn some great new lines. just make sure you run a good proxy, disable any messenger services, have uptodate security and so on. these are people who have no moral code whatsoever and will use personal info at the drop of a hat.

Ah, the battle styles of computer nerds who have no friends in real life, so they learn to hack and spread viruses along with their insults? The good times don't seem so good anymore, lol.....as I am not one of the more pc-savvy folks on the net ( i.e.: computer stupid), I'd rather talk shit in real life...or at least somewhere where you don't have to worry about someone hacking your shit, ya know?

No viruses or spyware can help people in that setting. :headbanger

i definately think that more than the greater percentage of the population of flametown really needs to get laid that's for the truth!
but, runnin through a simple proxy should keep you safe enough. a proxy is just an external server that hosts your connection. with a quick google search you can come up with many lists to choose from, then you simply put the servers ip in you innerwup properties. the proxy will catch most spammage and keeps your unique addy anonymous.

Now no generalizations on hackers. There are white hackers, grey hackers, and black hackers. Hate on the black hats all you want, but the white and grey hats are what keeps us safe from the black hats. Sorry...geek pride. I will shut up now and adjust my pocket protector. :D

# Black hat hacker: a hacker who commits criminal intrusions into technological systems for some real or perceived gain

# White hat hacker: those who attempt to break into systems or networks in order to help the owners of the system by making them aware of security flaws, etc. (Often work in, or start businesses based on security and security flaws.)

Lol....I don't, but....

The white hats/black hats thing was a lil obvious. :) Good guys/bad guys and whatnot. I have a friend of mine who can hack like a mother fuck, and my brother in law is I guess what you would consider a white hat dude.

Both are infinitely smarter than I am about that shit. Ask me about death metal, snakes, or working out and I can give you an earful and then some....as for computers: for a guy that uses them as much as I do, I know less than jack shit.
