Ok, I just realized that the band Death Angel Rules. I also think Voivod is cool. So all the reviews say Death Angel - Act 3 is their best, but Frolic in the Park looks awesome as well. What do you guys think???
I think I;m going to get Nothingface by Voivod. It looks cool. Anyone disagree?? I;m really starting to get into other thrash outside of the Big 4. Nothing will convince me that someone will beat Megadeth and Metallica but their are some other good bands out there. So if you have any other suggestions for a young thrash-head lets hear them.
Here's the video for "Voracious Souls" from DA's debut album, The Ultra-Violence.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjQjLLxWKCk
Speaking of The Ultra-Violence, check out what some idiot or another said about it in a review at Metal-Archives: "Why everyone seems to hail this as classic of Bay Area thrash is completely and utterly beyond me. The album is totally devoid of anything distinctive and original, as it's basically a third-rate ripoff of bands that came before, in this case, Metallica.(Who else?)"
Am I the only one who is annoyed about the ridiculous amount of credit that Metallica receives when it comes to thrash? Sure they helped to get the genre started and they released some kick-ass albums, but it's beyond fucking preposterous when bands like Death Angel, Testament and many others get criticized for "ripping off Metallica" when they sound nothing like Metallica. Perhaps most people do that because they don't know of any metal bands besides Metallica and think they can get some "cred points" by saying "this band or that band does nothing but rip off Metallica." :shrug
Getting back to the point of this thread, I've been meaning to check out Death Angel for a long time and I'm glad that I finally did. Thanks, Slasher.

Act 3 is excellent, but I'm partial to The Ultra-Violence for that sheer old school thrash vibe and long songs.
As for Voivod I've never been much of a fan, though I do like the Outer Limits, Negatron, and some of the older stuff like War and Pain.

So far I have only heard "Voracious Souls," but the song clearly has the vibe you're speaking of, so I'm glad to see that the album as a whole displays it. I knew that this band worth checking out!

The simple riff is awesome once the double kick starts. That bit is heavy as hell. :headbanger

All 4 Death Angel albums are good IMO. Each one gets more interesting to the ear as the band grew older (Andy was 14 when they recorded their first demo!). Excellent live band also.

You're right Slasher, Death Angel Rules...:pinky
My advice is get "Act III" first, then pick up "The Art Of Dying"..then go back and listen to all of their early stuff.
They have been kicking ass for a long time, I saw them open for Mercyful Fate back in 1984.
Death Angel are from the East Bay, so I get to see them play live in clubs around here a lot....:metal

I only got to see Death Angel live once. They played with Metal Church and totallly destroyed. They played all the classics including "The Ultra-Violence" in its entirety, and put on such an awesome show.

How dare you Mark....you should be "Thrown To The Wolves"..:monkeybang
I love "The Art Of Dying", of course a lot of the old stuff is great, but some of these new tunes are even better.
The crowd definitely still goes wild for the old tunes, it's just nice to hear some fresh new songs after all these years.
Local guitar hero Rob Cavestany has matured into even more of an amazing talent over the years, and drummer Andy Galeon still beats the shit out of the drums.

I've seen Voivod at least four times over the last twenty years.
The last time I saw them was their first live gig with Jason Newsted playing with them, they opened up for Exodus, "Tempo Of The Damned" tour.
In my opinion "Killing Technology" is their best album, it also has my favorite song by them on it "Tornado"...:thumbsup
Then I would suggest getting "War And Pain" and "Katorz", you can probably also find a "Best Of Voivod" CD.
and get an idea of what other Voivod CD's you might be interested in.

Either get The Best of Voivod for their older tunes or possibly get Kronik for a taste of their later stuff with some live tracks there are some remixes but even they are cool.If I remember correctly it features the vocalist that replaced Snake for awhile...Killing Technology is very cool but for their most thrashing album buy "RRROOOAAARRR!!!" killer fucking thrash, that one

When it comes to a band like Voivod, a best of is the smart choice to start with. That way you have a better idea of what YOU will like the most and are not depending on what others think.
I have also heard that cd's sound better if you buy them from the Amazon links on this site. :D

I'm going to have to side with The Art of Dying for Death Angel. I know your tastes decently well and I think you would love that one. It's much more of a punk feel than their earlier albums but I still love that one.
Act III is also pretty good.
As for Voivod all I have is RRROOOOAAAARRRR!!!! It's alright.
If you haven't gotten around to them yet, here's a list of some good thrash (and thrashy) bands.
Testament, Forbidden, Metal Church, Meliah Rage, Tankard, Kreator (Enemy of God is still my favorite album of all time), Flotsam and Jetsam, Annihilator, Agent Steel, Destruction, Exodus, Dark Angel, Hirax, Heathen, Overkill, Sodom, Sacred Reich, Vader.
Some harder to find ones:
Coven (6669!), Vendetta, Abattoir, Iron Angel, Attacker.
Just figured I'd get ya started.

I have heard almost all those bands. I own 3 Testament albums, my buddy has a decent amount of Kreator and I definitely like Terrible Certainity alot. Annihiliator rules also.

I've heard Flotsam and Jetsam. Jason Newstead's old band. They are cool. Cool cover of "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting"

Just don't bother with any of the recent Flotsam and Jetsam. Anything after Drift is pretty weak. In fact, I would say with each release after Cuatro, the band got more and more boring. Cuatro was great and I have listened to that cd more than any sane man would, but I liked every cd after it less than the one before.

Passes as in more than 1? Any chance of backstage meet-and-greet or anything with that? (please please please) :D
If I can get a laptop with wireless I should be able to send the pics immediately after each show. Not sure if I can get ahold of one but if I can I'll let you know, otherwise I'll do it first thing after getting home on the 1st.

Meet and greet I don't know. Those can be done if an interview is set up, but other than that I would say just try to see what you can do when you get there? :shrug
Yes, you have passes for both shows down there. You already have tickets for both right? You only have photo passes from the guest list and not tickets.
I wish I could help you with the laptop thing, but I'm like poor and shit. :cry

Yep, we got our tickets, flight and hotel, transportation, everything set. No worries on the laptop, I may be able to borrow one from my folks. Worst case scenario is I can't send you anything until Saturday evening when we get back.

I'm really liking the new album too. They played about half the album at the shows, and the songs are really catchy. Death Angel fans definitely need it, and other thrash fans should check it out also. They're going on tour soon, and everyone should go, cause they are an awesome live band.
