In honor of our recent discussion about Johnny Depp, I moved this movie up in my Q on netflix and watched it last night. On the surface it's just a pretty good movie with a nice story. But I watched it with a friend who's got it completely memorized so she pointed out all kinds of little extra things about it. She says it's one of the most divinely acted movies ever... once I paid attention to that aspect of the film I totally agreed with her.

I mean, Leonardo DiCaprio has been the object of my lust since Growing Pains, but in this film he's got his face all twisted up playing a mentally disabled kid, and I see what a great actor he is. Johnny Depp's role is really well acted as well. And the younger sister, though she has a smaller part, she really acts like a younger sister and says things a younger sister would say, and the actress herself is hilarious. Juliet Lewis' character is also very human, and her facial expressions and actions are that of what a real person's would be like when Arnie is being annoying and also when he's being silly. And of course the mom is an awesome character too.

I don't know, I guess I really just love these little "slice of life" type movies, especially when the character development is good and the acting is good.

I tried to watch it and it was depressing just to be depressing. Just didn't grab me either.

Aww, that's too bad. I didn't think it was depressing really. It actually fairly realistic in my personal opinion.

We all feel like we need something new sometimes.

Or maybe I'm just feeling ooky lately, so I felt at home watching it... what's eating Vertigo's grape lol!

I personally didn't care for the movie. My wife loves it though. I remember my sister being a DiCaprio fanand she was pissed when I told her that he wasn't acting like a metally disabled kid, that was the real thing! :D

I like my explanation better. ;) I preferred his role in Man In The Iron Mask as King Louie.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape was a great film .. young DiCaprio did an amazing job portraying his character, and it's refreshing to look back and see Johnny Depp in a more wholesome role.
