I could really use some help from all you guys on a school project of mine. As most of you know by now, I start my intern teaching this fall and I want to try something out. My idea is to play positive music in between classes and during working time to see how it effects student attitude and behavior. I know that a lot of teachers use music, but it usually is an album the teacher likes played non stop, or most often classical music. But I want to us pop, rock, and contemporary songs that have a positive lyrical content and the music is fairly upbeat, but the lyrical content is more important. While I am not opposed to religious music, the lyrics have to generic enough to pass school guidelines.

I have 14 tracks right now and want a bunch more, if possible. The ones I have chosen are:

Things Can Only Get Better - Howard Jones
True Colors - Cindi Lauper
Shining Star - Stryper
Fly Like and Eagle - Seal
Keep Holding On - Avril Lavigne
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Like to Get to Know You Well - Howard Jones
Alive - P.O.D.
Hold On - Good Charlotte
Survivor - Destiny's Child
Life is a Highway - Rascal Flats
Hero - Mariah Carey
Sing a Song - Earth, Wind, and Fire
Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson

So, as you probably realize from the list, this music is a bit out of my comfort zone, as it probably is for most of us here. However, in our preferred style, there honestly isn't much as far as positive message stuff. And the music is way too aggressive to be effective for what I want it to do.

Please, then, help me out some tunes that you think would work for this format, and especially some of you who might be more up on current pop, rnb, and alt music. As you can see, I am open to all genres of music and willing to listen to just about anything you think might fit in here. I would really appreciate the help.

First off, I would take away the Good Charlotte song because it makes me want to simultaneously laugh and gouge my ears with a grapefruit spoon beause of how utterly cheesy it is. I know it has a postive message but it is super duper cheese on top of brie on top of kraft singles. But that's just my opinion... lol

Anyway, Hmm... I don't have time to look up a lot of lyrics right now, but here are a few songs right off the top of my head that are upbeat or make me feel kinda happy

Seven - Sunny Day Real Estate
September - Earth Wind and Fire
Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani
Hey Baby - No Doubt
Steal My Sunshine - Len
Gotta be starting Something - Michael Jackson
Rock with you - Michael Jackson (though I know lyrics might be a bit touchy on this one)
Rapture - Blondie
Shining Star - Earth Wind and Fire
Tell me Something Good - Rufus
Pick up the Pieces - Average White Band (no lyrics just fun)
Me Myself and I - Beyonce (not upbeat, but empowering)
Exodus - Bob Marley
So Much Things to Say - Bob Marley
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
Where's the Love - Black Eyed Peas

I'll grab my ipod and take a look on there too, and I'll post more later.

Wow....thanks so far for the help. So far only a couple pass the lyrical test.

Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani
Shining Star - Earth Wind and Fire (but I am already using the Stryper version)
Me Myself and I - Beyonce (not upbeat, but empowering)
Exodus - Bob Marley
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
Where's the Love - Black Eyed Peas

Alot of the songs mentioned are really good songs and can make you smile, but I really need the lyrics to be positive and empowering. I have d/led the above songs and will be listening to them to see if the music fits in.

Edit - Added Rich Girl, Three Little Birds, and Dreams by Van Halen. Exodus was too long and too much religious content. Where's the Love isn't on my d/l site, Ruckus, so I am going to have to look for it elsewhere, but I am sure that I will want to add that too.

Thank you guys so much for helping me with this. I appreciate all the submissions and hope that you all can toss me some more.

Yeah, Bjork has some good stuff.

"All is full of Love" comes to mind.

I'm sure there are more, but I have to get to work this morning. I did bring my ipod though, so I'll take a look when I have a few mins to see what else I can come up with
