View Full Version : A small flaw with the local 4th of July parade

I was watching the local parade from my van, waitng for my brother, and one of the entries were a group of Mexicans on horses, I live in southern CA.
I realise what they were representing, but one went by with an American flag, I'm cool with that, but then one goes by with a Mexican flag, am I wrong for being a little pissed off over this? I mean it's the one holiday to celebrate America and then here comes some guy carrying a flag from another nation. I mean if I went to Mexico and started to wave an American flag during one of their national celebrations they would beat the hell out of me. What do you think?

I guess you need to ask yourself a question. Would you get upset if a bagpipe band marched with the Scottish flag, or if a group of Irish stepdancers had the Irish flag? Or maybe the Knights of Columbus with an Italian flag?
I think I would be more upset if they didn't have the US flag, but I personally don't see anything wrong with displaying their culture along with our flag. Especially if their group is designed to celebrate their heritage. Just because we are American does not mean cutting ourselves off from our roots. I understand that this is particuarly delicate because of the immigration issue, but as long as they are willing to show support for the US along with honor for their culture, I see nothing wrong with it.
Now, if it was a group that was formed to protest, or was showing disrespect toward America, then that is a totaly different situation. As long as they are celebrating being American of Mexican decent, then that's cool in my opinion.

I think that it is all about time and place. The question is, was there other cultures representing their flags in this way? America is a melting pot, so this kind of thing is going to be more accepted here then anywhere else.
We are all immigrants (except Native Americans of course), so there has to be a mutual respect for this not being about "your" thing. To me it sounds like this Hispanic guy was doing something out of line. Not because of any other reason then he was the only one doing it. That wasn't part of what was going on. Now if it was some kind of "A Small World" type parade, then by all means raise that Mexican flag high on one side and the American one flanked on the other side.
i thought that cinco de mayo was for the mexican flag :shrug

Although the date (5th of May) is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, I don't think that was the question at hand. I think the debate is if it was wrong for someone of Mexican heritage to fly a Mexican flag during an American Independence Day parade.
Sure it could be looked at as Mexican flag for Mexican independence day and American flag on American Independence day. But I think that is over simplifying things. America is the melting pot and Mexico isn't. Plus, I don't think Mexico celebrates our independence near as much as we celebrate theirs.
