i love it how he's pissed that people tear apart gay people and then he tears apart straight people. now, i have a lot of gay friends but they aren't hypocritical like this, nor are they dramatic teenage-angst type people. i sent him a long e-mail about how fucking ignorant he is and that he has to grow up. oh, and, because i'm straight, "i'm the same as george bush". FUCK THAT SHIT. i do not deal with ignorance.
anyone else's thoughts on this?

I have had to deal with this a shitload. There is a teacher at the elementary school I used to work at that loved to fuck with me because I was a heterosexual male. Her son has more issues then a life long subscription of Psychologist Weekly.
I have also had several lesbians try to go off on me about how I am automatically some Cro-Magnon knuckle dragger because I am a guy...and worst yet, I like women. :shock Then I point out to them they they have become the promoters of the exact same ignorance they think they fight so hard against.
I have zero problem with someone being gay. They have no more control over what they get turned on by then I do. If I woke up tomorrow and it was immoral to get a hard on when looking at a naked woman, there is no way I could change what I think. No matter how abnormal it would be for a guy to be turned on by a woman, I could not change. This is something they fight so damn hard to get us to understand, but yet getting them to understand it sometimes seems more difficult.

Oh well. Ya can't stop some people who insist on dwelling in some wierd politically warped reality from getting butthurt over the way things are when other's don't see things their way. I've known gay people who are as absolutely obnoxious as the most arrogant klansman out there. I've known lesbians who won't have a simple conversation about movies or music with me because of what's swingin' between my legs. It's ridiculous...so I look at it like this:
If you promote this attitude, don't be surprised at the number of people who you just invited to conflict. I'm not exactly a fan of being too uptight about things like race, sexual preference, and so on....simply because while things like this help mold you, they do not define who you are. And when you act like a 100% ASS, you're actually disgracing your "people" more than you are helping them.
Meh, this is why I don't like people..... :D
And by the way....that video was, in fact, really gay.

I've seen ignorance on the issue at hand i agree with Mark about people being gay it's there choice none of my business as long as they don't judge me for being straight I totally have no problems with gays or lesbians. I can see out people who are gay flip out in this way tho.(does not excuse the behavior tho) People in my area would ridicule people who where gay in my high school the only gay guy who what not hiding in the closet hung himself. He was a really cool guy bit of a flamer but he never judged me or tried to tell me anything like on that vid. In fact he was one of my best friends so this issue sucks the sad part is there will always be intolerant assholes out there who like to fuck with other peoples lives based on who there are and their sexual preference is.
. It just seems to me gay people get fucked with a lot and they just fight back with the same ignorance that gets thrown at them. I also hate the genreral public like SUAD.

I was told a story once concerning civil rights and why Afro-American people reacted the way they did in the 70's, and I think the central idea that came out of it is the same for this situation.
"You can only hold a man's face in the gutter for so long before he comes up swinging."
So, regardless on how accepting many of us are, there is so much pent up anger and rage that has to be dealt with before acceptance and reconciliation can happen. In the meantime, I think it best to allow the rants and just remember that they are not really directed at you. It is just a way for those negative emotions to find a way out, and be there for them (if they are your friends) when they are ready to reestablish a relationship.
And by the way, I too find using the phrase "that's so gay (ghey)" offensive, as well as any other phrase or word that describes any person or group in a negative light. I think we all could agree that we need a bit less negativity and a little more understanding. Well, maybe some of us, at least.

"You can only hold a man's face in the gutter for so long before he comes up swinging."
In a modern day sense: many of these "faces in the gutter" have no hands holding them there, sir. And depending on what city you live in (I guess) there hasn't been a "hand holding them down" for YEARS and counting.....and counting.....and counting........yet those with "hands" are still accountable in the minds of the delusional and ignorant.
FUCK THAT. Make no excuses for anyone and bail no one out who doesn't want help. Not to imply that that is what you're doing, to be sure, but that's my stance.

If you will reread my post, I did say that story came from the 70's and at that time, the civil rights movement was still in question. And even so, compare 30 or so years now of relative freedom and supposed equality to 300+ years of slavery and repression. It will take the passing of one or two generations that lived during that time for the anger and hate to disappate, because those that lived through that repressive era pass their emotions to their children. In other words, it will take many more years before all of that goes away.
In the case of gays, or more appropriately homosexuals and lesbians, in most parts of the country they are still considered less human, deviants, sinners, and what not. They face discrimination, persecution, hostility, contempt, and ridicule on a daily basis. Now, maybe it isn't the case where you live, but nationwide it is a very real issue. In our town, we are considered one of the most progressive in attitudes towords same-sex relationships in Michigan, but even here there is much open hostility, especially from the far right. Like those that came through the civil rights movement, it will take many years for all that hurt and anger to go away even after they gain equal rights and treatement under the law. And consider that we still are not to that point yet.
This discussion isn't about helping those that just want hand outs, or those that won't help themselves. It is about treating everyone equally and with respect. I am afraid that we, as both a society and as the human race, are a long way from doing that.

I read your post correctly the first time, good sir. :) So far as the history of various sects of society being treated poorly....well....every sect of society has been treated poorly at one time or another. I definitely understand what you're saying, I am just stating that people need to get over it....the sooner the better. Humanity has never been programmed to be "kind" in nature, so to speak, to others. We learned this trait throughout our evolution....so naturally things take their time, but....and know this: there's no such thing as a "minority", just people who want their voice heard over everyone else's. I, for one, am sick and tired of hearing everyone bitch about how they're treated unfairly when on a personal level....us "majority" folk have received unfair treatment just as often in the modern society. For any proof of this, just live in any given southeastern state for a while. :monkeythumb

I should add that I work with (and am friends with) many gay people who don't allow themselves to get caught up in surrendering to the usage of "gay" as a negative adjective to personally affect them. Much in the same way that I have plenty of black friends who do not allow the much feared "N" word to affect them. They are words.....words only hurt you when you let them. Truly progressive people know this, rather than fall on the "OMG I'M SO OFFENDED" b.s. as a crutch.

i'm in the same position as you. i have a black friend that listens to horror punk. and a gay friend who doesn't act like a pmsing bitch. i rip on them and they rip on me. who gives a shit. we're friends. i accept the fact that i am who i am and so do they. and although there are a lot of people out there who still don't accept really awsome people because they are who they are, it's not fair to generalize everyone else as being a scumbag. especially people like us who can look past the whole race/sexuality barrier. i just got pissed because the dude in the video is quite possibly one of the biggest hypocrites out there. he says to stop spreading hate towards people who don't deserve it and then spreads it himself. no one is going to listen when you're a hypocrite. not me at least.

While it is true that people should "Just get over it", that is easier said then done. Yes, the faster the better. Yes, this would be better for everyone if we could move on. I think everyone would like to find a way to move past the more negative parts of life.
Why can't we? Because this shit is still going on! Do you tell a rape victim to get over it while she is being raped?
So while it does piss me off when someone takes things too far, I see why it will take many years to move beyond this kind of thing.
I think that was Bonehead's point. Not that we should dwell on it, but that it is going to take time for things to heal. We are being told that this takes time and we need to "just get over it". ;)

Totally with ya on that. I worked with this total bitch that was black once. She would always use every chance she could to use being a woman and being black as a way to get away with shit, not do her work, be rude to people. She took things a little too far when she tried to sue the school dist. They won and part of her settlement was to quit. Several other black people that worked there got really pissed at her because they felt she made it harder for them to be respected in the work place. They weren't mad at the district at all, they were pissed at her.
So we have moved forward and that is a good thing. There is so much further to go though.
One thing that automatically heals this is the fact that there is getting to be less and less of any "pure" black, white, Hispanic, Asian, or whatever else. It's hard to be racist if you are of mixed ethnicity. This is something that can not be stopped and there are some good things about it. There are some bad things as well such as lost culture, but that is a whole 'nuther can of worms. :uhoh

Do you tell a rape victim to get over it while she is being raped?
Eh...uh....ok.....taken to an extreme....just a bit.....
Rape is in no way equivalent to being called a n*gger, a q*eer, a wetback, white trash.....whatever epithet one chooses. WORDS ARE NOT ACTIONS. If I call you a supreme dickhead, that won't hurt nearly as much as me punching you (or anyone) in the gut or kicking you (or anyone....) in the face. See my point?
Funny how the people most apologetic about the state of racial concern are white. Most other races really could give a fuck and/or are too busy blaming us honkies for their situation. :) Time to stop apologizing, stop coddling, stop regretting, stop trying to change the past through condolences that no one alive today knows a thing about for the most part. Start taking away the power of hateful slurs by merely laughing at them, rather than condemning them until you're blue in the face....that wastes MORE time.
The smart ones simply don't give a damn. I understand what you're saying Mark....but at the same time that kind of "it's gonna take a while" attitude helps prolong the situation.
No more "awwww.....we all need to heal" and a lot more "fuck it, it's only a word and I (you, anyone else) am above that shit".
Oh, and these slurs (racial jokes, "homophobic" jokes, etc) are actully funny when the hate is taken out of them......

True, but just the same do you see mine? I was only trying to point out that the reason people are still so pissed about it is that it is still going on. It's hard to recover from something when it is still happening. That was my point. Did I use an extreme example? Sure. Sometimes it takes that to make a point.

All the stomping of your feet demanding what you think is right does not make it happen any quicker. It will take time no matter how much that bugs you. Me and my wife have a standing joke about food preparation. When we stick something in the microwave, we often say, "I don't have all minute"! No matter how hungry we are, that food is going to take the exact amount of time it needs to be ready.
My point is that we don't live in a dream world where we can snap our fingers and have things be the way we want them. Even when we are right, things take the time that is needed.
You say words are not the same as being raped, but this is not just about words. It is about many more atrocities then that. Many times this includes rape too! And no I am not talking about the 50's. This still happens today. People are treated a certain way because of their color of skin. As I have said, I think we are moving forward to stop this kind of behavior. As the behavior gets better, so do the attitudes of the people that are subject to that behavior.
Oh, and these slurs (racial jokes, "homophobic" jokes, etc) are actually funny when the hate is taken out of them......
Yes, but that is why we leave that to the pros. It takes a very special balance to make sure there is no hate meant or misconstrued. I have no problem with comedians that use racial humor to defuse the racial tensions. I also love it when shows like South Park do this. However, this board has enough problems with people taking things wrong, misunderstanding intentions, etc. Add racial humor of any kind to that mix and this place would die out real quick and I would have to kill the board every few days to calm things down. I have seen it happen a million times before. I will not sacrifice my board for a joke that could be told better in a more appropriate stage.
Make a poll and most here would rather leave the racial jokes off this board. ;)

I do see yours, no doubt. BUT....I get the impression that you haven't had to deal with the extent of racial backlash that we have in the south. That's not your fault, but it's enough to make one sick. Ever had a n*gger stick a gun in your face and demand that you NEVER say "hello" to him again? I have, and it's a very irritating situation to sat the least. ONLY BECAUSE I'M WHITE, DUDE.
I could not disagree with you more. Are you seriously saying you don't think minorities are pissed about racial stereo types, racial slurs, and racial hatred?
Nope, that's not what I'm even close to saying. What I AM saying is that the smarter people of this country DENY THE POWER given to these slurs by both bigots and those who wish to incessantly cry about racial tensions to no worldy fucking end. And.....what I said was "apologetic"....pathetic fucking whites want to sit there and lament over their ignorant ancestors and continually offer these lame fucking apoligies.....in many cases to people who would just as soon fill you with lead as they would look at your white pasty "controlling" skin. Do you not realize that many of these afro-american souls you're trying to touch with your well intentioned sentiments hate you? Dude.....PLEASE!!!!!!!! Come live down south for a year and I promise you'll have more than one experience that will lead you to KNOW YOUR PLACE, so to speak.

Honestly, you have admitted that you have anger issues. People with anger issues come in all shapes and colors. I have found that people who have anger issues attract others with anger issues. Yes, I have been in situations where I was threatened with violence because I am white and was in "the wrong side of town". I quickly lost interest in going to those places. Instead I go places where I will enjoy myself. I hate the drama and nothing in those areas is worth my life.
the pros???? the PROS!!!!!????? Jokes are only left to "pros"?????? WHAT????!!!!!! Dude, gimme a break. This is where you distance yourself from tangible reality.
DUDE! Watch the personal insults. Keep it to the facts. Also, you are seriously twisting my words. I never said leave ALL jokes to the pros. I said that I do not allow racial jokes on my board. It is about time and place. Do you think for a second that Mencia walks around alone in Harlem yelling the "N" word? Time and place...even for the pro's. When on this board we leave the racial humor to the pro's. In other words, if done in a tasteful manner one could post a video of a comedy skit. That skit could then be discussed...if done in a tasteful manner. Now if things start to get like this has, I start locking threads until people calm down and things get rational again. The more someone gets all angry on my forums, the more strict I get. I hate drama. I hate insults. I hate it when someone brings things down to a level where things are not fun any more. This place is here to be fun. Debates like this are boring as fuck to me because it is something I have done ad nauseam. I would rather talk about stuff that is more entertaining to me.
The comedy featured by Lisa Lamponelli and Carlos Mencia is EXTREMELY entertaining and has very valid points if you pay attention. They accept and acknowledge that strereotypes exist in this world. And they LAUGH AT THEM. They reach out their hands for us to laugh at this as well....as we SHOULD.
They use comedy to defuse things. Try defusing sometime. Have some fun once in awhile. Count to ten. Doesn't being angry all the time get boring? You seem to always be on the hunt for reasons to be angry. That has to get old.
DO NOT BOW!!!!!!!!!!! Goddamnit, that's embarassing when people think we should kiss someone else's ass only because of the color of their skin.
Who is kissing anyone's ass? I just don't want my board to be about stupid racial jokes that promote ignorance.
What gets me is that I believe a lot of white people accept Lamponelli's and Mencia's comedy only becasue they are not white. As Mencia has said: Stop being a fucking pussy and say what's on your mind concerning race.
Well here is one thing I disagree with Mencia on. You have just given me the perfect reason why I do my best to keep racial discussions off this board. People get all pissy, start tossing insults, then leave because I tell them to not throw insults and racial slurs (as you have done in this very post). People can't tell the difference between a joke and something that is just plain ignorance. 99% of racial jokes are just not funny and are only good for promoting hatred towards someone because of their race. Stop being a fucking pussy and stand up for what is right...even when it is considered uncool. See, I can debate your way too. Notice how it doesn't solve anything or make any point? Do you see my point yet?
Ok, ok.....anti soapbox soapbox is over. :D
Good. I hope so. Now calm down. Count to ten. Have some fun. Relax. This place is for talking about music. Everything doesn't have to turn into this big negative thing. Really...it doesn't.
Honestly, I think you can be a very cool guy if you could just deal with your anger issues. Always ask yourself, "Is this really worth being angry about?" or "Is this really worth ruining my day for?" Most of the time it really isn't.

First off, I didn't think SUAD was being angry in his posts. I think he was making good points, and some people just like to swear a lot ;)
I watched the video and this guy is a total douchey hypocrite. How are you going to sit there and say "stop being negative, stop attaching a negative connotation to a word" and then with the next breath say "I want to kill the person that taught a kid to say 'that's gay'"
I watched another one of his videos too (drugs are for fugs or some shit) and this dude is seriously just off his rocker.
Also, how did a post about "that's gay" turn into an argument about racism? :wtf
As far as I know, gay people come in every color...

There have been some valid points on both sides of the issue, but there is one thing that I want to take issue with. SUAD's statement that words do not hurt as much as physical violence.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind, nor in volumes of psychological literature, that words do much more damage to a person than physical actions, short of killing them, though words can do that as well. People can heal from broken bones, cuts, scrapes, being shot, and what not. But the effects of words on a person's life can, and often do, last a lifetime. As both a parent and an educator, I can attest to the impact of words....sometimes even a thoughtless comment can impact a person for years. Simple things like calling a kid a dummy can ruin their educational experience. A little comment from a parent to a daughter concerning weight can lead to anorexia or bulimia. The examples can go on and on and on. And just because you might be callous enough not to let anyone else's comments bother you does not negate the effect of words on the vast majority of our population.
In truth, it isn't just negative words that have impact. Positive words can have as much of an effect on a person as the negative do. Tell a kid that just struggled to get a C that they did terrific work and to keep it up, and guess what? They do, and the grades keep getting better. Tell your daughter that she is beautiful, regardless of how she really looks, and watch her face light up. Tell your son how proud you are of them, and see the look in his eyes. How do you feel when your boss tells you that you are doing a good job? But tell me that the sting is not just as real as a slap when he/she chews you out for something, especially if it wasn't your fault.
The sense of self-worth in most people is tremendously fragile. Often it only takes a snide comment, a casual insult, or a careless joke to effect their mood or attitude for days, if not weeks. Spoken insults are often carried with us much longer than physical injuries. So while it is easy for you to let these "words" roll off of you, you have to understand that for the majority, it is just not that easy.
And forums should give us the very best indicator of this effect. How easy is it to get pissed off at what someone has posted. Don't their words have a very real effect on us and our moods? How many people stop posting, or stop visiting a forum because of what they have read, or having been insulted. You can't hit someone over the internet...you can't shoot them, you can't rape them, you can't break their bones, but you certainly can hurt them.

FTR-I have zero problem with swearing. Say fuck all you want. It's all about the context. To say "Fuck this", or "That movie was fucking stupid" is fine. This place ain't supposed to be fucking Disneyland after all. :D There is even a forum where you can post disemboweled corpses.
When I have issues is when the lighthearted atmosphere here is compromised. Glad things have gone back to that status. :cool

this has turned into a very good thread. both sides make good points.
i use the term "that's so gay" all of the time. i have gay friends that use the term. i'm not worried about it. i've never been a pc person (unless you count animals, because they really don't have any way to counter what humanity has done to them) and i dont plan on ever being one. i quite enjoy pissing people off, so if i piss off a gay person because i said that something is gay, then that is funny.

Very valid points. And for the most part I agree to the extent that these are generally things that can occur in childhood and adolesence. Of course words can hurt, but as an adult (and depending on the level of security one has with his/herself) one can realize that that they are only words. You give words the power, simple as that. If I took exception to every numbnut that talks shit or calls me a name at my job: I'd have been in WAY more fights than I already have been in, and possibly fired as a result. I've had more people call me honky, cracker, racist, etc without knowing a thing about me or even hearing a word out of my mouth in some cases than I can count.
Like I said, your points are decent, but just so no one thinks I'm talking out of my ass on this:
I grew up with a bi-polar mother who has told me that I should never have been born, I'm worthless, etc. This lady kicked me out of my house at 6 years old, amazingly, to walk through backwoods Virginia roads in December. Fortunately this led to my parents divorce......but she eventually hooked up with men who degraded me as a kid, hit me with everything from pots to whiskey bottles (still got a lovely scar under my eye from that one), to their hands. One lovely dude even pulled a gun on me when I was 10. Life sucks.....oh well.
I've had all kinds of shit thrown at me and you're right, it's more or less devastating as a kid. As I got older I realized that (after many many conflicts and rough times) you are the only one who controls how things affect you. The world will always be the world....other people will always be assholes from time to time. It happens, and I believe that it is part of the maturation process to let things slide. Yes, sometimes things affect me, but nowhere near as much as they used to. And sure I get pissed like other people out there, but I go to the gym and lift, go boxing with friends, practice some jiu jitsu.....go for a walk. Something, anything.....other than blaming others (like apparantly what our youtube fairy was doing at the beginning of this thread) about how hurt he is. My father once told me that my anger would eventually consume me if I let it (as several others have since, uh...Bonehead, lol) but for the MOST part, in reality: I try my best to not let it do that. I don't think it's too much to expect this of others in society as well regarding the issues we have discussed in this thread. :)

i'm sorry you had to go through all of that. i had many of the same experiences as a child as you did, and no one should have to go through that. i guess that's why we have a lot of the same views on shit...and curse just a little too much sometimes. but dude, seriously, PM me or something if you need to talk about anything. ok?

Expecting anything out of someone else is highly frustrating. Just as you can not expect someone to fully understand you unless they went through the same things, you can not expect them to have your understandings or tolerances unless they have gone through what you have.
That is why I think it so important to treat others with respect and to avoid words and actions that I KNOW will hurt others. I do not feel that my right to expression is so important that I trample on the feelings of others.
I understand the frustrations of others not living up to simple societal standards. No one should spew vicious words at another, just as children shouldn't be abused. And I understand the concepts that they are just words and shouldn't have that kind of power. I don't freak out over curse words, or personally about insults. But this is not a perfect world, and should any of us feel that our personal rights to say whatever we like are more important than the feelings of those around us, then these issues are not going to go away. And no amount of saying that they should just grow up is going to change that.
