View Full Version : Who has the most distictive voice in extreme metal?

So on another thread I said something with the hopes that someone would call me on my bullshit. Yes, I do that sometimes. I also have been known to take a side in a debate just to fuel discussion and thought here. So since the question was never made there, I will make it here.
Who are the most distinctive voices in extreme metal? Now because the debate over who is "extreme" and who is not could force everyone to miss the point here, I must make a few rules.
1. This is NOT about your favorite, the most brutal, or anything else other then most distinctive.
2. Keep it to your top ten
3. Only Death, Grind, Black-metal, Crust, and doom with death vocals count.
4. Our reference is Metal-Archives.com If they say it is one of the styles listed above, then it counts. If they don't label it that way then they do not count.
5. You don't have to come up with ten if you can't think of that many distictive extreme metal vocalists. :P
Have fun! :metal
FTR-I have a pro-extreme metal point I am trying to prove here. So don't let me down! :D
The most distinctive extreme metal vocalist to my ears is David Vincent.

here's a little list i put together whilst chewing through forests of paper, in no particular order of course:
john tardy - obituary >>no one sounds like him at all yet often imitated<<
chuck schuldiner - death >>i know it didn't really need to be said<<
tom g. warrior - celtic frost >>truly the heart and soul of creeping rusty meat<<
quarthon - bathory >>unholiness when unholiness was uncool<<
ihsahn - emperor >>the black metal version of king diamond<<
peter tagtgren - bloodbath >>yes i know he is in other bands, but his work on nightmares made flesh is amazing!<<
will smith - biolich >>this is what crusty grind should sound like right here<<
joe horvath - circle of dead children >>simply beautiful<<
and of course my personal inspiration, david vincent - morbid angel >>the luciano pavoratti of death metal!<<
and for a couple of local heros that indeed are listed in the metal archives:
nihilist - in memorium >>a hauntingly sorrowful black metal voice<<
wayne & garth - effluvia >>masters of the integrated grind barking<<
there's a couple to chew on, i gotta get back to pissin off hippies!
:headbanger
David Vincent when heard, you will never mistake him for anybody else
Chuck Shuldiner... do i really need to elaborate?
Ihsahn perfected what black metal vocals are supposed to sound like
George Fisher say what you will about the guy, nobody has better range than he does

yea, sometimes i do tend to ramble on don't i!
*grin*
i think you will enjoy the new breed of vocals i am working on also there sir. i have taken a lot of what people say to heart and am defining and shaping my vocals more and more. of course i will always be a cookie monster. that will not change. but i am working diligently on enunciation, depth, range and clarity. i really do want people to understand a word here and there. it helps induce nightmares!

Damn, what an easy question.......
1. Lord Worm (ex-Cryptopsy)
2. Joe Ptacek (Broken Hope)
3. Dave Vincent (Morbid Angel and that other....band....thing...whatever)
4. Abbath (Immortal)
5. Chuck Shuldiner (Death, etc...)
6. George Fisher (Cannibal Corpse/Monstrosity/Paths Of Possession/Corpsegrinder)
7. Micheal Haaga (Dead Horse)
8. Frank Mullen (Suffocation)
9. Barney Greenway (Napalm Death)
10. Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation)
I based my decisions on the fact that these guys, within the extreme metal circles, are instantly recognizable and can be confused with no one else. Perhaps I chould have put Travis Ryan actually at the TOP of the list rather than the bottom......and maybe Frank Mullen has a lot of sound alikes, but other than those two, my list is good to go. Coulda thrown Benton and Barnes on there too as those guys are instantly recognizable as well......but I didn't want to, so there we go.

Dude, no doubt, it doesn't get batter than a death metal cover of "Rock Lobster", hahaha. Those guys were REALLY big in these parts around the early 90's.....shame they split, they were going in an awesome direction. I know a few of the remaining guys are in a new band that has an awesome live show....I forget the name of the band, but they hang body parts on chains from all over the venuw when they play, it's great. I think you'd like it, man.

John Tardy - Obituary
Maurizio Iacono - Kataklysm
Two very good choices as well. For all of Tardy's incoherentness, you definitely do NOT mistake him for anyone else.....ever. I love it, as the dude proves the whole "OMG ALL THESE GUYS SOUND THE SAME" factor wrong. As for Iacano.....great vocalist.....seemingly a little rockstarish (he's known for cancelling gigs based on turnout, venue size, etc.), but nevertheless a cool artist. Only singer I've ever had tell me to literally chill out (apparantly spitting on kung fu kids that are trying to make fun of you is bad) from onstage......

I've talked to Maurizio a couple times at Kataklysm shows and he's always seemed cool, but I always hear about stuff like you mentioned. Cheers to you though for trying to discourage the kung fu kids. :monkeythumb

Ha....that particular incident involved a dude that was trying to be cool for his friends and get a rise out of me. He thought it was funny until the rise thing worked. Shockingly, he backed down from the confrontation later....but anyways: FUCK THOSE KUNG FU QUEERS. That shit gets so annoying....and the sideways hats and My Chemical Romance/As Blood Runs Black/ Random 4000 Word Name Band That Means Jack Shit hoodies.... or maybe I'm just getting old and don't get the new scene at all.
To be honest, my friends and I there were wondering what Kataklysm was doing on a Sworn Enemy tour.....with 7 other kung fu bands. Most of the kids there didn't even watch Kataklysm (obviously not the death metal crowd), which was kinda lame as they were the best band there. :metal
i think that johan hegg from Amon Amarth should be a part of this. There are very few death metal vocalists that i know of that when they growl, you can hear and understand every word being said. not only that, but his growl has good range, and i can always tell that it is him when i hear his voice.

Lord Worm may end up as a new addition to my list.I ordered Blasphemy Made Flesh yesterday.I shall report back with my findings:cool
BTW - Amon Amarath gets on my fucking nerves.Their vocalist sounds like shit, and their music is just as bad from what I've heard by them so far.:D

I like Johan Hegg's vocals. Their first full album is still the most appealing to me, and I really liked the way he changed his style to a few different voices on most of the songs. His bellowing at the end of "Dragon's Flight Across the Waves" is very powerful and unique, along with a very solid low and high growl.
