"Beautiful tragedy" by In This Moment is a truly impressive album. This record has surprising intricacy and musicianship. Maria Brink, on many tracks, recorded dual vocals; one serene and one over the edge. This lends a surprising punch to their sound. The album straddles many genres and can be enjoyed by many different types of music fan. The rhythm guitarist often accompanies the lead on breaks and solos lending richness and depth to the guitar sound. The drummer and bassist are incredibly talented, and occasionally seem to be reading each other’s minds they are so tight.

To the music! The title track flirts with balladry. Its lovely intro and Maria’s smooth crooning, lull you into harbor like a siren song, only to smash you against the rocks, in a brief moment of painful ecstasy. They then let you float back out to sea as they gently rock you. This song will be equally comfortable on the radio and in metal clubs. "Ashes" features inspired screaming paired with vocals that could soothe baby OR beast, while showcasing the talents of the band. "Daddy’s Falling Angel" features a TASTY solo with accompanying melody lines by the rhythm guitarist. "Legacy" shows the softer side of the band giving a glimpse of vulnerability highlighted by singing of surprising depth and subtlety. Near the end she sounds as if she is singing through tears of impotent rage. "This Moment" has changes that hook you and unexpected acoustic guitar. "Next life" has the rhythm section firing on ALL cylinders as if linked telepathically. This song finishes with Maria delivering the scream of a mighty warrior. "He said eternity" has Maria sounding vaguely Madonna-ish. "Circles" starts off with emotive singing reminiscent of Bjork and entrancing guitar work through ought with perhaps the best of the solos on this album. "Storm" is a hauntingly beautiful lullaby designed to put you to sleep at the end of your musical journey.

In these MEDIOCRE times it is rare an artist or band has the audacity to do something different. In This Moment has not broken the mold.... They’ve NUKED it, scooped up the sludge that remained and reshaped it into something entirely new. This album is SO hard to classify. Its equal parts hard rock and metal with a dash of pop sensibilities thrown in. Whenever you try to appeal to a larger group of people you risk losing them ALL by creating something overly ambitious or hard to relate to. Make something REAL and there is always someone who appreciates it....ME!

What can I say? This band plays like they've been together forever? This album is WAAAY better than any young bands first album should be? This album can be appreciated by nearly anyone? All true, but in a day when bands sell albums on the strength of one single...It is a treat to find an ENTIRE album worth listening to.
VERDICT? ROCK!

I hope the Band likes it becuase they are one of my favorite acts now!
