View Full Version : Arch Enemy
Who else here considers them to be an amazing band?

I still say that Fear Of God is better then Arch Enemy, but Arch Enemy does seem to be getting better. I just wish Angela wouldn't try so hard to sound like "One of the guys" and try to sound more original. Compare two live performances below.

The first one sounded like a bad, bad, bad, BAD impression of early Hole. Or it could be the other way around.
The second, Angela sounded much better. Sorry, my 2 cents. The second actually sounded exciting, whilst the Fear Of God thing would be ok to relax to.

Fear Of God was before Hole or Arch Enemy. It is vintage thrash metal. Not even the same style as Hole. :D

Vocals...vocals.....vocals....vocals.....vocals. Sound. Just. Like. Hole. Period (at least in that song they do). ;) And umm....Hole began the EXACT SAME YEAR as this band. I don't think Fear Of God sounded bad at all.....just...kind of....sleepy in that video.

Hmm? I can't stand Courtney love's vocals and I have always like Fear Of God. :shrug
You did nail me on them starting at the same time. :uhoh

Listen to "Pretty On The Inside" or "The First Sessions" from Hole. Vocals match.

It's ok, I once claimed that Rotting Christ was from Italy, and Vish claimed that BTBAM was from the wrong Carolina. :D This was long, long ago though......

Do I have to? :cry Seriously, I hate Hole so much that I don't think I would hear it. I will totally admit to having a closed mind to this. :rotfl I just hate her so much that the thought of her sounding anything like Dawn Crosby is unthinkable.
Um, this thread is supposed to be about Arch Enemy...

Yeah.....concerning that: Arch Enemy are cool, nothing uber-super-OH MY GOD-spectacular, but I can dig 'em.

Yeah, that Fear of God band kept me interested for about .017 nanoseconds. But I kept listening for about a minute just so I could hear the Hole-ishness. Totally sounds like Courtney Love to me too. Bo-ring. (imo)
That Arch Enemy clip was the shizz. Couldn't watch the whole thing cuz I'm at work, but the video, the tightness of the band, the fact that you could actually HEAR what they were playing, and the energy of Angela blows that Fear of God vid out of the water. Not the best two examples to post next to each other for someone who's never heard Fear of God before. I'd have to hear a VERY good CD to ever be interested in checking them out again now...
Now when it comes to Arch Enemy, I would like to go to Mark's example. I hear a lot of people (mostly men usually) saying they wish Angela would stop growling and stop trying so hard to be one of the guys. Um, excuse me, but as a woman who WISHES she could growl like that and be in a metal band, when did it become NOT okay to be a tomboy, sing like a dude, wear all black, and front a metal band.
If Angela sang like Tarja from Nightwish, she'd be getting the exact opposite criticism of "Gee, I wish Arch Enemy had a growler for a singer... that soprano chick really sucks"
Basically what I'm saying is, it sucks to be a woman in metal BECAUSE you have to work twice as hard to prove that you can kick ass no matter what your style of singing, guitar playing, bass playing or drumming is... if you are female you DO have to "try so hard to be one of the guys" because if you don't you're laughed out of the industry.
No matter, Arch Enemy kicks a hell of a lot of ass. Their riffs are solid, the shredding solos make my all gooey inside, and the fact that those growls are coming from a female are what made me pay attention to this band and give their Doomsday Machine album a chance.
I will be getting Rise of the Tyrant next time I go on a CD shopping spree. This band is definitely at the top of my list.

Excellent post!
Also, pick up Wages of Sin and Anthems of Rebellion soon if you can.

Wages of Sin is a great album. I like some of the stuff before then but I hated Johan Liiva's vocals. There's a few songs on Anthems of Rebellion that were good, but it was a letdown and I lost interest in them. Their new one is supposed to be really good. Anyone heard it yet?

Yeah, Johan Liiva just may have the most boring sounding voice of all-time.

Amen to that.

A lot of people seem to agree with you about that, but to me, Anthems of Rebellion is Arch Enemy's most consistent album, so I fail to understand why so many people see it as a disappointment.
