View Full Version : Color ideas for Heavy As Hell please?

Ok, so some have nick named Heavy As Hell. The nickname seems to be Ugly As Hell. Part of the problem is that the person in charge is color blind (seriously). So this weekend I am going to be working hard to pick the colors. Now since I am color blind I must make some rules.

#1 rule-you MUST reply with the hex code and the color name. Otherwise you will be ignored by the webmaster who has no idea what rose red or sky blue is. http://www.markcarras.com/colorchart.html

#2 rule-HAH will always have as little graphics as possible. There are several reasons for this. First being that this type of site is never heavy on graphics. Second is that it saves on bandwidth (whic is the reason for rule #1).

#3 rule-Let's try to pick one color at a time. For example, start with the color of the boxes on the right hand of the site. Under "Top Today", "Upcoming news", & "Categories". Then we will move on to another area of the site. Just trying to keep it simple.

#4 rule-all text has to be very light colored and all backgrounds must be dark. Otherwise some text will be invisible or hard to see.

#5 rule-Ummm? I can't think of one now, but give me time. :D

Since the site has "hell" in the name I vote for a red (ff0000) orange (ff6600) and yellow (ffff00) theme with black or white text everywhere depending on whether black or white would be easier to read.

background 000000
main text ffffff (headings and comments and article summaries)

I think the boxes are mostly fine the way they are with the brown-ish orange (cc6633 or whatever it is) tabs on top and the orangeish-red boxes (or ff3300 or whatever it is) but the light blue text has gotta go.
I'd change ALL text to white or black
The green box at the top of the page should match the other boxes on the side of the page

Basically all the colors could be red or orange or even yellow for all the boxes and clickable links, and all the other text should be either black or white (whicever shows up best on the color it's being used on - for example if it's a yellow box it should prolly have black text in it, and if it's a red or orange box, it should have white text bold enough to read easily)

Something like that.
Obviously red orange and yellow flame logos or graphics could be simple and sweet. Yes, a little cheesy, but so what...

Just working on the boxes right now. Otherwise this could get very messy and impossible for me to make any sense of it. ;)

On the text:
This uses a horrid CSS, so all text has to be very light colored and all backgrounds must be dark. Otherwise some text will be invisible or hard to see.

Ok, white text on the boxes was blinding brite on the page overall. Too much white.

Black left the text in the square vote count boxes invisable (black text on black background)

So I am trying a light grey. C0C0C0 Does this pass for everyone?

When it comes to colors, by all means tell me I am way off on something (color blind). So I am not 100% against all white text. I just think that is too bright.

Ok, I might have figured out a solution to the "too much white is too brite" problem. The color DCDCDC seems to be an extremely light grey. I think we can use that on almost everything and then have pure white (FFFFFF) be the "mouseover" color for all links.

What does everyone think? :shrug

Yeah that light gray text looks way better than the light blue that was up there

Now... you gotta figure out what to do with the green strip up top...

Give me a hex code for the green strip on top. What do you think it should be? How about the other changes I made? Not too much grey? Being color blind I always go for grey alot. :uhoh

cc6600 for the green strip up top, or the same orange-ish brown that's used in the other boxes...

Also, the light mint green text for "home, log in, register" etc should maybe be the same grey as the other text ?

If those changes look cool, then I'll see if I have any other suggestions. I like it better now though, it is definitely coming together.

Ok, trying to find that to change it. I'm pretty sure that is a graphic background but I show no backgrounds that color. Grrr. I will do my best to get that suggestion implemented though.

UPDATE: I found what needed to be changed to make that color change. So is this better? :shrug

So not too much grey then? :shrug

Yeah, even my color blind eyes find it has a more cohesive look to it all now. I couldn't have done it without you all. :cheers

Ok, I tried that and it clashed with a ton of other stuff because it was too light. Remember, we have to have dark backgrounds because we have light colored text.

So here is the plan so far. The thing I am going to try and change next is the right hand boxes.

I like the colors, but I think they should be flipped so that they match the "Vote" boxes. So it will be red on top and brown on the bottom. Matching the vote boxes.

I don't know how this got missed, but what I meant was to have the green strip up top be the same orange or brown color as the strips up top of the boxes on the right side of the screen.

Yes, the upper box matching the other color scheme is better

So not too much grey then?
Um, no - More gray would be better. It's still a weird minty green color, so all the text should be that light gray you found...

It's definitely better, but still more tweeking could be done.

Maybe I gave you the wrong hex code, but I was trying for the code that matched the brownish that was in the heading areas of the boxes on the right, so yes, I know we need lighter text on a darker background...

I like this idea. The strip at the top of the page will be red, the upper parts of the vote boxes and right hand boxes will be red and the lower parts of the vote boxes and right hand boxes will be brown? I think that will look better still...
