View Full Version : Symphony X
Is anyone here a fan of this kick-ass band? If so, do you prefer the band's previous style that was more prog-based, or the current direction that's primarily rooted in metal?

I know I really liked the new one. Never had a chance to give an honest listen to the older stuff though.

I haven't listened to much of their older stuff, but "The Odyssey" is an excellent album, and the new one is right up there too. Their singer has a great voice, he can stretch up to higher ranges and can get gritty and aggressive.

Ahh, Symphony X rips! They're one of my favourite prog bands, period. Michael Romeo is an excellent guitarist, both technically and because he pours so much soul into his solos, and Michael Pinella wails in soaring ranges. I still haven't heard much of their latest album, but I rather liked what I did hear. And I love their previous stuff, too. They can drag out an epic for nearly a half hour and make it feel like any other shorter song simply because of how much they pack into there. A truly awesome band all around.

I'm necroposting to heap praise on the latest Symphony X album "Paradise Lost". I heard it when it was new, courtesy of my cousin who's a big fan, but didn't own it myself until last week. This is simply the best group of songs Symphony X has put together so far. The title track alone is worth getting it for, with a truly amazing vocal performance from Russel Allen and a gorgeous chorus. Several of the heavier moments on the album are downright furious, but always catchy even when they're playing in weird time signatures. Highly recommended for all traditional/power/technical metal fans.

I played the new video for my niece because she is really getting into computer animation. She said it reminded her of Dragonforce. In her defense, she likes Deep Purple after she discovered them on a video game. My conclusion? We need more metal in video games. :monkey

Video games are very good at getting music out there. Most of my friends do not like metal and most hard rock when I just blare it out of my car when they are driving with me, but we have always liked playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games and one of them has a Primus song and it has "Ace of Spades" so whenever I play Ace of Spades all of my friends love it. Same with "Hangar 18" which was in guitar hero. Video games are a great way to get your music out there. I would have never heard of The Sword if it wasn't for Guitar Hero I.
