My only question is, why would you buy guitar hero, when for maybe 10-15 dollars more you could go to Target and pick up an electric guitar starter kit and learn to play a real guitar?

Because they don't want to learn to play guitar. I have a friend who plays this with his son and loves it. Since the game is only about the rythem, there isn't a huge learning curve before you can have fun playing the game.
However, I think that this is where these games are leading to. In a few years the game will be about being able to play real songs with real strings. The trick though is making it a fun game. if it isn't a fun game people will not do it.
